BOYS FIELD EVENTS 2025 PREVIEW

To start 2025, we’re previewing all 16 events heading into the track & field season. Performances listed reflect an athlete’s best mark on TFFRS from last season. We also have accompanying podcasts that can be heard on Apple or Spotify.

High Jump (4 returning medalists)Jordan Randall - 11 - Warsaw - 3rd at state - 7’0.5

Jay Hmurovich - 12 - Brebeuf - 4th at state - 6’7

Ayden Eckstein - 12 - Batesville - 6th at state - 6’8

Adetayo Adewunmi - 12 - Avon - 8th at state - 6’6

Of note:

Alexander Brandon - 12 - Chesterton - 6’8

Chazz Corley - 12 - Warren Central - 6’8

Lonte Ward - 12 - Lutheran - 6’8

Outlook: Randall is the clear favorite here with more than a four-inch advantage based on PR over his closest competitors. He also cleared seven feet indoors this season before the calendar turned to 2025.  Brebeuf senior Jay Hmurovich is the second returner from the state meet, and the Braves do have fringe title contention chances with a lot of returners from last year’s squad. Lutheran senior Lonte Ward cleared 6’8 last spring; he did not medal in this event at the ‘24 state finals but finished sixth as a sophomore two seasons ago.

Pole Vault (4 returning medalists)

Landon Dobbs - 12 - Henryville - 3rd at state - 15’6

Connor Langsford - 12 - HSE - 4th at state - 15’3

Isaac Roman - 10 - Crown Point - 6th at state - 15’3.5

Caleb Furr - 12 - Tipton - 6th at state - 15’3

Of note:

Demarco Easter - 11 - Merrillville - 15’5

Joe Sandrick - 12 - Chesterton - 15’0

Outlook: An event typically dominated by upperclassmen, Crown Point sophomore Isaac Roman could vie for an individual championship here as a sophomore after finishing sixth as a freshman, the best place by a ninth-grader since 2015. Henryville senior Landon Dobbs cleared the highest bar and had the best place at state of any returner. For team considerations, HSE senior could provide big points for the Royals again after last spring’s runner-up finish and Merrillville junior Demarco Easter may help the Pirates considerably.

Long Jump (2 returning medalists)

JonAnthony Hall - 12 - Fishers - 2nd at state - 23’3

Lonte Ward - 12 - Indianapolis Lutheran - 5th at state - 22’4

Of note:

Sebastian Sprague - 11 - Mt. Vernon - 23’4

Michael White - 11 - FW Homestead - 23’2.75

Jaylen Ramsey - 12 - Merrillville - 23’0

Joel Joseph - 12 - Merrillville - 22’11

Damir Swanigan - 12 - Franklin Central - 22’9.75

Outlook: Based on the nature of the event and the returners, the long jump is very open this spring. Fishers senior JonAnthony Hall is the top returner from the state meet after finishing second, just two inches shy of the winning distance. Hall also scored in this event as a sophomore, finishing fourth. Three others, in addition to Hall jumped 23’ or farther last spring. Ward is notable here as double medalists in long jump and high jump are relatively rare. Merrillville’s title hopes hinge on performances in the field events so seniors Jaylen Ramsay and Joel Joseph leaping beyond 23 feet could have massive implications on the team score.

Shot Put (3 returning medalists)

Weston Ott - 11 - Churubusco - 3rd at state - 60’5.75

Owen Edlen - 12 - Chesterton - 8th at state - 55’10.5

Kameron Kauffman - 12 - Warsaw - 9th at state - 57’7

Of note:

Brock Conrad - 12 - Floyd Central - 57’1.5

Adam Camphor - 12 - Merrillville - 56’8.5

Chance Butz - 12 - Morgan Township - 56’7

Masson Heiney - 12 - Richmond - 56’2.75

Outlook: This has been a very strong event the last several years that could see performances come back down to Earth this spring. Churubusco junior Weston Ott has quite a gap on the field in both best distance and state meet finish. Merrillville pops up here again; if senior Adam Camphor can develop into close to sixty feet the Pirates could be a tough team to beat with so many points away from the track.

Discus (4 returning medalists)Zack Frieden - 12 - Kankakee Valley - 4th at state - 180’10

Theo Thurmond - 12 - Carmel - 6th at state - 172’6

Brock Conrad - 12 - Floyd Central - 7th at state - 188’1

Will Kemper - 12 - East Central - 9th at state - 179’9

Of note:

Kaleb Rasheed - 11 - Avon - 177’6

Ozzy Pollard - 12 - Carmel - 173’8

Cameron McHaney - 11 - Indianapolis Lutheran - 172’3

Damien Shanklin - 12 - Warren Central - 171’8

Kameron Kauffman - 12 - Warsaw - 170’1

Outlook: Floyd senior Brock Conrad had the best toss of last spring at 188’1 with Kankakee Valley senior Zach Frieden the best returner from the state finals. While double medalists are a frequent occurrence, double winners in the throwing events are rare for the boys with the last coming in 2012. Conrad represents the best chance for a sweep this spring. Warsaw senior Kameron Kauffman could be very competitive at each discipline as well. Warren senior Damien Shanklin was fourth in this event as a sophomore in 2023 and should be considered a contender this year.

GIRLS FIELD EVENTS 2025 PREVIEW

To start 2025, we’re previewing all 16 events heading into the track & field season. Performances listed reflect an athlete’s best mark on TFFRS from last season. We also have accompanying podcasts that can be heard on Apple or Spotify.

High Jump (7 returning medalists)

Kya Crooke - 12 - Heritage Christian - state champion - 5’11

Kira Smith - 10 - Warren Central - 3rd at state - 5’8.5

Nina Garner - 12 - Munster - 5th at state - 5’6

Bailey Sinish - 11 - FW Carroll - 6th at state - 5’9

Riley Rarick - 11 - Borden - 7th at state - 5’7

Waverly Woolever - 11 - Hamilton Heights - 7th at state - 5’7

Emily Ritenour - 12 - Brownsburg - 9th at state - 5’6

Of note:

D’Aaliyah Kemp - 11 - Park Tudor - 5’7

Callie Alston - 11 - Orleans - 5’6

Valencia Miller - 11 - Culver Academies - 5’6

Emma Warner - 10 - Carmel - 5’6

Outlook: Crooke is the clear favorite here. The Heritage Christian star focused on just two field events last year for the state meet after competing (and scoring) in four individual events as a sophomore, likely to stay fresher for the long day of competition in the high jump. Warren Central sophomore Kira Smith is the number two returner by state meet place, though it’s possible last spring was her only track experience as she concentrates on other sports after the Warriors dominated the team competition. For this year’s team competition, potential contender Carroll could pick up big points here. Junior Bailey Sinish has medaled twice in this event to start high school (5th in ‘23, 6th last year) and classmate Isabella Slone was ninth as a freshman but did not advance to state last year. Carmel sophomore Emma Warner could be big for the Greyhounds’ title hopes after clearing 5’6 in ninth grade.

Pole vault (5 returning medalists)

Ann Elise Sloan - 12 - Evansville Central - 4th at state - 12’0

Jane Paddock - 12 - Lawrence North - 5th at state - 11’9

Makenna Carpenter - 11 - Cathedral - 7th at state - 11’6

Alexandra Hamilton - 12 - Westfield - 9th at state - 11’0

Khloie Walker - 12 - Center Grove - 9th at state - 12’0

Of note:

Amelia Smith - 10 - Noblesville - 12’0

Lauren Dunn - 12 - Plainfield - 11’6

Hannah Ludwig - 12 - Borden - 11’6

Addison Martin - 11 - Franklin - 11’6

Scarlett Olsson - 10 - Fishers - 11’6

Hannah Smith - 12 - Center Grove - 11’6

Outlook: Sloan is probably the favorite here with a 12’ clearance and fourth-place finish at state. Center Grove senior Chloie Walker also went over 12’ and and along with Cathedral junior Makenna Carpenter is looking for a third consecutive medal in the event. CG has two potential scorers in this for team implications. In addition for the team race, Hamilton Southeastern junior Riley Williams finished seventh as a freshman but did not advance to the state meet last spring. The Royals were third last year and return most of that team.

Long Jump (5 returning medalists)

Kya Crooke - 12 - Heritage Christian - 3rd at state - 19’9

Elnora Stephenson - 11 - Whiteland - 4th at state - 19’1.5

Milyn Kirsh - 10 - Avon - 5th at state - 18’4.75

Makenna Brooks - 12 - Eastern (Greene) - 6th at state - 19’1

Jillian Barr - 11 - Delta - 9th at state - 18’5.25

Of note:

Ellie Campbell - 12 - Oak Hill - 18’6.25

Lydia Goodsell - 10 - John Glenn - 18’5

Olivia Smith - 12 - North Central - 18’3

Outlook: After winning this event as a sophomore, Crooke was third in the long jump last year. No girls has ever won the high jump and long jump in the same year. In fact, Crooke is the only girl ever to win both in a career. The long jump being so early at the state meet should provide Crooke the opportunity to get in some good efforts early and focus on her other events later in the meet to conserve energy. Whiteland junior Elnora Stephenson is the most likely challenger to Crooke’s supremacy here with the second best distance last year and the second returner from the state meet. Stephenson also finished on the podium as a freshman, placing eighth in 2023.

Shot Put (2 returning medalists)

Gwen Howard - 12 - Whitko - 4th at state - 48’2.5

Macey Miller - 12 - Fishers - 8th state - 43’4

Of note:

Emma Gardner - 12 - Greenwood - 43’4

Carly Von Dielingen - 11 - Whiteland - 41’5

Outlook: Whitko senior Gwen Howard has the 13th best toss in shot put history and finished fourth at last year’s state meet, a sign of the strength of the 2024 field in this event. Howard has a nearly five-foot edge on her closest competitors, and the only other athlete returning from the podium is Fishers senior Macey Miller.

Discus (4 returning medalists)

Gwen Howard - 12 - Whitko - 5th at state - 140’6

Sophia Scott - 10 - Silver Creek - 6th at state - 143’3

Carly VonDielingen - 11 - Whiteland - 7th at state - 145’8

Emma Gardner - 12 - Greenwood - 9th at state - 149’1

Of note:

Becca Robbins - 12 - Linton-Stocktown - 141’0

Sophia Dyer - 11 - Whiteland - 134’11

Outlook: This seems one of the most open event heading into the season after four of the top 12 all-time graduated. Howard, the shot put favorite, has proven her mettle on the biggest stage with great performances at the state meets the last three years. Whiteland may not have the depth to be a tier-one title contender, but junior Carly VonDielingen could give the Warriors big points in both events with classmate Sophia Dyer scoring here as well. Field events could keep Whiteland in the mix for a trophy.
