November 30th, 2013 – Punching Their Tickets!
By: Drake Sterling
Saturday was a big day for Indiana running fans. On a beautiful day in Kenosha, Wisconsin, hundreds of athletes took to the famous UW-Parkside Cross Country Course with the goal of earning a top 10 position and the opportunity for a trip to San Diego, California on Dec. 14th for the Footlocker National Cross Country Championships.
Unfortunately for the other competing states, Indiana stole the show, grabbing 5 of the 20 qualifying spots. In the girls race, Kelcy Welch dominated the competition, winning in a personal best 17:34. Not surprising, HSE Junior Rachel Nichwitz kept herself in contention and grabbed the 9th spot, qualifying for the finals. What was surprising, however, was Pendleton Heights’ Alex Buck, who finished 10th overall and earning the final qualifying spot. Buck was just 19th at this year’s Indiana State Meet and had a previous personal best of 18:18. LaPorte’s Elena Lancioni was also 21st.
On the boys side, both Jackson Bertoli and David Dalton, who finished 1-2 at the State Meet, were on their game. Both set personal bests with Bertoli finishing 5th (15:14) and Dalton finishing 9th (15:22). Kaden Eaton was also 22nd while Mark Beckmann was 26th.
Congratulations to our 5 qualifiers and good luck in San Diego!
The races will take place at Balboa Park with the girls race beginning at 9:15 AM and the boys 10:00 AM PST.
