November 13th, 2012 – Carmel Girls and Boys Highlight NXN Midwest Meet

The 2012 NXN Midwest Regional at the Lavern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute was well hyped coming in and in turn, did not disappoint.

The meet, which featured many of the top teams and individuals from Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Mich

igan, and Ohio, has grown especially larger over the last three years. The top two teams from the meet automatically qualify for the NXN National Meet in Portland, Oregon and receive a full paid trip and boatloads of gear along the way. In addition to the team competition, the top five individuals not on qualifying teams also earn a trip to the greater Northwest.

Ashley Erba (Warsaw) won the Championship girls race

and earned a spot, however, admitted post race that she would surpass the National meet in favor of representing Inidana in next week’s Mideast Championship Meet and also for an opportunity to compete for the top honors in the Footlocker CC finals.

The positive of Erba dropping her spot is that it

opened up an opportunity for West Lafayette’s Bobbie Burgess to qualify. Burgess originally finished 6th overall.

The highlight of the meet, however, was in the team results. The Carmel girls (Carmel Distance Project) dominated the team competition, winning 91 to 107 over Naperville North High School, the Illinois State Champions. The Carmel boys (Carmel Distance Alliance) impressed as well as they nabbed the second automatic qualifying

spot for Portland, finishing with 162 points.
