June 6th – Girls State Meet – Irby, Rohrer, Black Shine Brightest

On a beautiful Friday in Bloomington, athletes from around the state of Indiana gathered to put on a great show at the 2014 IHSAA State Meet.

The best show, as expected, came from Lynna Irby (Pike), Anna Rohrer (Mishawaka), and Symone Black (Concordia Lutheran).

Irby, just a freshman took on one of the toughest triples ever seen in State History. At around 6:30 pm, Irby took to the track aiming to grab her first ever State Championship. In less than 12 seconds, it was hers. Irby claimed the 100m title in a blazing time of 11.61. The time makes Irby the fastest ever female in Indiana not named Maicel Malone. In the process, she also gave a surprising threat to Malone’s State Meet Record of 11.52.

Less than 40 minutes later, Irby lined up as the number one seed in the 400m. Irby dominated the competition, running a season best of 54.38. Her nearest competition, Kiawna Cottrell (Pendleton Heights), finished nearly a second and a half back in 55.76.

Lastly, at 8:00 pm, Irby lined up again, this time as the favorite for the 200m final. Irby left no doubt, running a great curve and snatching the lead up before she even pulled onto the straight-a-way. She would extend that lead, finishing in 24.07 and distancing herself from second place, Amber McGee (FW Northrop) who finished in 24.72.

3 races. 3 wins. The future is here.

While Irby was putting on her own show, Symone Black (FW Concordia) had her own agenda. Black, a co-favorite in the 100m hurdles would go on to win that event convincingly in a personal best 14.17. Second place was future Mental Attitude Award Winner, Holly Hankenson (Belmont) in 14.32.

The 100m hurdles were just the warmup though. We expected Skyler Carpenter’s 2013 Meet Record in the 300m hurdles (42.03) to be challenged, but no one could have predicted what would happen next.

From the moment the gun sounded, Black, coming out in lane 4, controlled the race. By 150 meters in, the race was over. The clock was the only challenge left. As she came down the straightaway with a 15 meter lead, the crowd held their breath. She crossed the line and almost immediately, the IU scoreboard lit up revealing a new State Meet Record of 41.32. Carpenter’s record was demolished, and Symone Black would go down in history.

Coming into the second from last event, the crowd stayed late, and the sun went down behind the trees. The conditions were perfect for a fast 3200. Anna Rohrer, who ran 10:20.68 in 2013, just .02 off Waverly Neer’s State Meet Record, was on a mission. Boxed in for 350 meters, Rohrer finally broke lose from the pack.  Like clockwork, she hit her splits perfectly. It was obvious by the mile that she was going to do it. By the 6th lap, she would have a 100 meter lead over second place Kelcy Welch. With one lap to go, she just needed to run 81 second last 400 to get the record. She never left any question. She would power down the last 200 and finish in 10:14.43, winning by 30 seconds. The crowd had been on their feet since 500 meters to go. The atmosphere was electric.

A great night of track and field wrapped up one event later under the lights. The crowd stayed all the way through and why not? Lawrence Central would go on to win the team title.

Going into Saturday’s Boys State Meet, the fans are riding on cloud nine. We can only hope the Boys meet is nearly as exciting as the girls was.
