August 28th – Boys Meet of the Week – Conference Indiana
With the new IHSAA Calendar moving Sectionals from Tuesday to Saturday, many schools were forced to move their Conference meet to earlier in the season. This is exactly the case for the Conference Indiana, who will be competing at the great Indiana University Cross Country Course in Bloomington this Saturday.
#3 Bloomington North, #4 Bloomington South, #6 Columbus North, #15 Terre Haute South, #21 Franklin Central, Southport, Perry Meridian, Terre Haute North
The team race is exactly what you’d hope for in an early season battle. Bloomington South, Bloomington North, and Terre Haute South already met last weekend at the Bloomington North Early Bird held at Lavern Gibson. The result was the Cougars running away with the title with 45 points to Bloomington South’s 52. Terre Haute South was third with 95 points. On a scorching day in Terre Haute, Bloomington South actually managed to put four runners through the chute before Bloomington North got their third in. Unfortunately for the Panthers though, North closed the door at 16th while South rounded out their scoring in 28th. This was the difference.
You can expect a completely different race to unfold this Saturday. Temperatures should be more manageable and the early season jitters are past. A conference title is on the line and both teams have improvement to make still. Don’t be surprised to see the Bulldogs of Columbus North sneak in though. CN has yet to post a result this season, although they did host a dual against Columbus East earlier this week. Every year, the running community gets excited to see how CN is going to reload after graduation and this season will be no different.
#21 Franklin Central looked better than advertised at the Carmel Classic last weekend. The Flashes nearly knocked off a previously ranked top-10 team in Zionsville. Kyle O’Malley looks to have had a great summer of training and is ready to run with the front dogs. The Flashes have a real shot at knocking off Terre Haute South who will likely be training through this meet and keeping their eyes focused on October as always.
Individuals to Watch:
Anthony Williams – Bloomington South
Seth Williams – Columbus North
Chase Ballard – Columbus North
Evan Franklin – Bloomington South
Spencer Danielson – Terre Haute South
Griffen Tichenor – Bloomington North
Fergus Arthur – Bloomington North
Harrison Streib – Bloomington North
Peter Davis – Terre Haute North
Any one of these individuals could conceivably walk away with the win on Saturday. All are extremely accomplished, high talent athletes with race savvy. What we know is that Anthony Williams is in great shape, having won last weekend’s Bloomington North Early Bird in a very quick-for-the-conditions 16:12. His nearest competitor was Fergus Arthur of Bloomington North, a full 15 seconds back. Once again, the wildcards will be Williams and Ballard of Columbus North. Both have their eyes set on the long-term goal of being top 5 at the State Meet and are arguably the most consistent runners in the pack.
