2012 Track Season:

State Finish: 2nd – 1600 meters – 4:09.60 – 6/2/2012

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:26.5 – Carmel Semi-State – 10/22/2011

3200 – 9:20.18 – Hoosier Crossroads Conference– 5/11/2012

1600 – 4:09.60 – IHSAA State Meet – 6/2/2012

Bio:

Reeder is the top returner from last year’s State cross country meet. He has proven over and over that he is one of the elite talents in Indiana.

As the third place finisher in 2011, Reeder ran the 19th fastest time ever run on the Lavern Gibson course.

Reeder’s 2012 track season was excellent, and he finished it off with an excellent 2nd place finish in an exciting 1600 in 4:09.60. The time was good enough for the 18th fastest 1600 ever run by an Indiana high schooler.

Reeder will face off with preseason #2, Connor Sorrells at the State Preview Meet on September 1st.

2010 State Finals Finish – 106th Place – 16:59.7 – 10/30/2011

2012 Track Season:

State Finish: 2nd – 3200 meters – 9:01.40 – 6/2/2012

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:20.3 – Brown Count y Eagle Classic – 9/10/2012

3200 – 9:01.40 – IHSAA State Meet– 6/2/2012

1600 – 4:13.75c – Franklin Central Flashes Showcase – 4/13/2012

Bio:

Connor is one of two favorites going into the 2012 cross country season. He and the eventual number one can really be considered 1a and 1b.

Connor really stepped up big at this past Spring’s State Meet, finishing 2nd and nearly breaking the 9 minute barrier for 3200 meters. The performance snapped a series of disappointing endings to seasons which will help cement him as a top performer going into this season.

Connor has always been one of the most talented runners in the state, which is why coming into the season, he has the fastest personal best of anyone in the state. Look for he and Barr Reeve to do a lot of damage this season.

3. Alec Kostelnik – Sr. – Morgan Township High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 10th Place – 15:45.1 – 10/29/2011

2010 State Finals Finish – DNQ

2012 Track Season:

State Finish: 9th – 3200 meters – 9:11.89 – 6/2/2012

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:44.1 – New Prairie Semi-State – 10/22/2011

3200 – 9:11.89 – IHSAA State Meet – 6/2/2012

1600 – 4:23.08 – IHSAA Sectional – 5/17/2012

Bio:

Kostelnik is another one of the “top tier” athletes, who on the right day, could leave Terre Haute as the individual state champion. He showed a lot of growth in 2011, running his best when it counted, including his only two sub 16 minute performances at the Semi-State and State Meet.

The same was true in track, where he dropped 20 seconds off his 9:31 personal best in the 3200 at the State Meet and grabbed 9th place. Kostelnik will see good competition at New Prairie, Culver, then again at the Semi-State. We should know a lot more about him after seeing him compete at the first two mentioned big meets.

With his rate of improvement, anything lower than a top 10 finish at the State Meet would be surprising, even with the level of individual talent this season.

4. Matt Dorsey – Sr. – Lawrence Central High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 44th Place – 16:18.6 – 10/29/2011

2010 State Finals Finish – DNQ

2012 Track Season:

State Finish: 4th – 800 meters – 1:53.42 – 6/2/2012

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:28.6 – Brown County Eagle Classic – 9/10/2011

800 – 1:53.42 – IHSAA State Meet – 6/2/2012

Mile – 4:12.63 – Franklin Central Flashes Showcase – 4/13/2012

Bio:

Dorsey is one of if not the most dangerous runner in the State. The only contending individual with his pure speed that comes to mind is Michael Passmore. Dorsey had another phenomenal track season this Spring which ended with a solid fourth place PR finish in Bloomington. Along the way, he further improved himself as a miler as well, running well at the Flashes Showcase.

Dorsey, unlike some mid distance runners, can compete well on the tougher courses, which is evident by his strong showings at the Northview course. He also did very well in the miserable conditions at last year’s Culver Invitational. If Matt can put it together in Terre Haute, he could very well pull off a big upset.

5. Jackson Bertoli – Jr. – Terre Haute South High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 34th Place – 16:09.7 – 10/29/2011

2010 State Finals Finish – 183rd  Place  – 18:25.0 – 10/30/2010

2012 Track Season:

State Finish: 8th – 3200 meters – 9:09.81 – 6/2/2012

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:47.5 – Brown County Eagle Classic – 9/10/2011

3200 – 9:09.81 – IHSAA State Meet – 6/2/12

Bio:

Jackson Bertoli’s improvement this past track season lead to his preseason ranking this cross country season.  His solid sophomore cross country season proved that he could be a front runner in just about any meet. He took that to the next level in track, when he won the Regional 3200 and placed 8th at State in one of the fastest 3200’s ever run.

Jackson has excellent training partners including Logan Hambrock who will run under the 16 minute barrier as well. The Braves are a top 10 team it looks like so expect big things coming out of Terre Haute. On a good day, Jackson has the upside that he could contend for the top spot at Lavern Gibson.

6. Ari Coulopoulos – Jr. – Valparaiso High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 9th Place – 15:45.0 – 10/29/2011

2010 State Finals Finish – 44th  Place  – 16:20.1 – 10/30/2010

2012 Track Season:

State Finish: DNQ

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:45.0 – IHSAA State Championship – 10/29/2011

3200 – 10:09.68 – Valparaiso Dual – 3/8/2011

Bio:

Ari has been the center of a lot of conversation on the Indiana Runner message boards these past few months. Most notably for his decision to run a limited track schedule for the Vikings.

He has been catching a lot of flak and people seem to be doubting

his ability to continue to improve this cross country season based on his lack of performances on the track.

What people need to realize is that he did the same thing in the Spring before his Freshman and Sophomore seasons as well. Whatever work he was doing seemed to be working as he proved to be Valpo’s front runner and finished an excellent 9th place at State as just a Sophomore.

7. Patrick Appleton – Sr. – Carmel High School

2010 State Finals Finish – 33rd Place – 16:13.7

2012 Track Season

DNR (Injury)

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:38.0 – Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational – 9/17/11

3200 – 9:25.24 – HSR Indoor Finals – 3/17/12

1600 – 4:20.12c – Flashes Showcase – 4/13/12

Bio:

Pat will be returning from an injury which cost him nearly all of his outdoor track season in 2012. His indoor season showed however, that he was poised for a big jump in performance.

Appleton’s spot in the State Finals is secure as the Carmel Greyhounds are the (very) early favorite for the State Championship. He is one of the most consistent runners in the State so a top 10 finish should be expected.

On a side note and for those who haven’t heard, Carmel has switched to the PAAVO training program. The program, which Columbus North has modeled their team after for years, is one that if followed correctly, could make Carmel one of the best teams in history.

8. Jacob Poyner – Sr. – Warsaw High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 61st  Place – 16:30.0

2010 State Finals Finish – DNQ

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 1600 – 10th – 4:14.37

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:50.7 – New Prairie Invitational – 9/17/11

3200 – 9:22.18 – Northern Lakes Conference Meet – 5/8/12

1600 – 4:10.00c – Midwest Distance Festival – 6/8/12

800 – 1:56.24 – Goshen Sectional – 5/17/12

Bio:

Poyner had a tremendous track season that he will look to duplicate this Fall. Thus far in his career, he has been better on the track than on grass. Suprisingly, he’s only broken the 16 minute barrier twice. Fans should expect to see him under that mark in almost every meet this year and could see a big personal best on a fast course.

The Warsaw Tigers will be motivated to perform as a podium team this Fall as well. Expect Poyner and teammate, Ellis Coon to be logging some good miles this summer to help reach that goal.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

9. Michael Passmore – Sr. – Mooresville High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 33rd Place – 16:09.4

2010 State Finals Finish – DNQ

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 1600 – 11th place – 4:16.81

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:54.7 – Brown County Semi-State – 10/24/11

3200 – 9:31.58 – HSR Indoor Finals 3/17/12

1600 – 4:16.81 – IHSAA State Finals 6/2/12

400 – 50.11 – IHSAA State Finals 6/3/11

Bio:

For those who follow Passmore, they were amazed to see his progression this track season. As a freshman, he was tenth at the State Track Meet in the 400. He also ran a stellar 23.61 in the 200 that year.

Three years later, he’s a 4:16 miler and has the ability to be one of the most dangerous athletes in the State.

His success isn’t just on the track through. He showed up big time at last year’s State XC Meet, qualifying then finishing an impressive 33rd in his first appearance.

The big story here is that Mooresville was moved from the Brown County Semi-State to the Carmel Semi-State.  His path will be a little bit tougher in order to make an appearance, but we should still expect to see him in an All-State role.

10. Jacob Reinking – Sr. – Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 16th Place – 15:54.7

2010 State Finals Finish – DNQ

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 1600 – 18th place – 4:22.80

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:54.7– IHSAA State Meet – 10/31/11

3200 – 9:39.64 – New Haven Relays – 4/27/12

1600 – 4:22.80 – IHSAA State Finals – 6/2/12

Bio:

Reinking joins Panning on our Preseason All State list after having one of the best individual performances at last year’s State Meet. Reinking shocked a lot of people when he finished 16th in a personal best, 15:54.7. The finish was especially impressive as he only finished 13th at the Semi-State Meet!

Reinking was slightly better than his teammate, Panning, last cross country season. In head to head matchups, Jacob came out on top 6 of 8 races. He also had a very good track season, showing his versatility running solid 1600 and 3200 personal bests. Expect big things from the FW Concordia Cadet as he and the team enter the season with high hopes.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

11. Zachary Panning – Jr. – Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 25th Place – 16:01.5

2010 State Finals Finish – DNQ

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 3200 – 16th place – 9:21.32

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 16:01.5 – IHSAA State Meet – 10/31/11

3200 – 9:21.32 – IHSAA State Finals 6/2/2012

Bio:

Panning had a huge performance at last years XC State Meet, finishing 25th and grabbing the last All-State Position as just a Sophomore. It was by far his best performance of the season and was a really good first taste of State-wide success.

Panning backed up that performance this Spring, qualifying for the State Meet in the 3200 and finishing a solid 16th in 9:21.32. That time shows there is a lot of potential comparative to his cross country marks.

Fort Wayne Concordia also has a very good team and Panning has a great training partner in Jacob Reinking. This will help make this season a memorable one for all of the Cadets.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

12. Spencer Clapp – Sr. – Cathedral High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – DNQ

2010 State Finals Finish – DNQ

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 3200 – 10th – 9:13.92

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) 15:48.0 – FlashRock Invitational – 9/17/11

Bio:

Spencer had his big time break out race at FlashRock in 2011 and has been running very well ever since. He put on a gutsy effort that day, getting up front early and holding on for what would end up his season P.R.

Spencer had an untimely bad race at the Brebeuf Regional and unfortunately would not finish the competition.

Clapp came back head-hunting in track this year. He progressed well all season long and ran a personal best 9:13.92 for 3200 meters at the State Meet, gutting out an unexpected 10th place finish.

One thing you like about Clapp is he runs with a chip on his shoulder. He will no doubt carry that over to avenge his poor performance at the Regional in 2011. If he takes it up one more notch, he will be in the top 10 battle individually.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

13. Cole Hester – Sr. – Lawrence Central High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 21st Place – 15:59.3

2010 State Finals Finish – DNQ

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 3200 – 27st place – 9:48.34

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) 15:44.7 – Brebeuf Regional – 10/24/11

3200 – 9:34.16 – North Central Regional 5/24/12

Bio:

Hester, who lurks quietly behind LC Star Matt Dorsey is a sneaky runner who became very consistent last season.  The truth is, he and Dorsey could not be more opposite. Hester has average legspeed but can really do some damage at 5,000 meters.

The “Compression Kid” really showed up big carrying the Bears to a 5th place finish at last years XC State Finals. His unexpected 21st place finish helped negate the down race for teammate, Matt Dorsey.

Look for Hester who has flourished under Coach Tyler McCreary’s reign to be a legit contender for a top 10 finish.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

14. Charlie Watson – Sr. – Carmel High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 23rd Place – 16:00.0

2010 State Finals Finish – DNR

2012 Track Season

State Finish : DNQ

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) 15:36.0 – Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational – 9/17/11

3200 – 9:38.18 – Indoor HSR Finals 3/17/12

Bio:

Watson is one of the least talked about athletes in this Preseason All-State list. He is also one of Carmel’s most consistent runners. Watson generally trades off duties as the number 2 and number 3 guy with a few first scoring marks for the Greyhounds as well.

Watson didn’t have a great Spring on the track but its nothing to fret about. Watson is built for longer distances and the Greyhounds will be taking this XC season very seriously.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

15. Kyle Eller – Sr. – Lowell High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 52nd Place – 16:24.2

2010 State Finals Finish – DNQ

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 3200– 11th place – 9:14.55

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) 15:52.0 – Highland Invitational – 9/24/11

Bio:

At the rate Eller continues to improve, he could certainly play a factor in the battle up front. In 2011, he dropped exactly one minute of his 5k XC personal best and 58 seconds off his 3200 personal best. He showed up especially well at the State Finals in track, posting a 21 second P.R. and narrowly missing the podium by just two spots.

His lack of experience will make it tough to pull off a top 5 finish, but a top ten is certainly a possibility. The season will start out slow for Eller and the Red Devils, but by the time the New Prairie Invitational comes around, make sure you’re keeping tabs on him.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

16. Kyle Duvall – Sr. – Westfield High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 46th Place – 16:19.5

2010 State Finals Finish –  DNQ

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 4×800 Relay – 16st place – 8:03.94

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) 15:44.1 – FlashRock Invitational – 10/31/11

1600 – 4:16..77c – Flashes Showcase – 4/13/12

Bio:

Kyle had a tough Spring both on and off the track. He certainly cannot be faulted for struggling after the Flashes Showcase.

On the plus side, he is in the best position of his high school career thus far to make the State Finals. Not only is he one of the top returners individually, but the Shamrocks look on paper like a lock for a State Finals birth as a team barring major injury.

17. Bobby Browning – Jr. – Carmel High School

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 50th Place – 16:22.4 – 10/29/2011

2010 State Finals Finish – 111th  Place  – 17:02.9 – 10/30/2010

2012 Track Season:

State Finish: 17th – 3200 meters – 9:22.43 – 6/2/2012

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:52 – Hamilton County Championships – 8/30/2011

3200 – 9:22.43 – IHSAA State Meet – 6/2/12

Bio:

The up and coming Carmel Greyhound made huge improvements during the 2012 Track season which landed him at number 17 in our Preseason All-State.

Browning has improved very consistently every year even since being a middle school phenom in the Carmel area. He appears to be best at longer distances although he does have deceiving speed. I think this year, as a Junior, Browning will really figure out the cross country 5k distance. Based on Carmel’s depth, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Browning lead the Greyhounds in a few meets during the season.

18. Jonathan Harper – Sr. – Carroll High School (Fort Wayne)

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 48th Place – 16:19.8 – 10/29/2011

2010 State Finals Finish – 82nd  Place  – 16:47.6 – 10/30/2010

2012 Track Season:

State Finish: 14th – 1600 Meters – 4:19.82 – 6/2/2012

1st –  4×800 Relay  – 7:41.29 – 6/2/2012

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 16:03.9 – New Prairie Invitational – 9/17/2011

1600 – 4:17.32 – Pike Invitational – 5/4/12

Bio:

Jon may not be as high of a returner as his previously ranked teammate, Alex Hess, but after further evaluation, one can make the argument that he has actually been slightly better in cross country. Jon beat Alex six times to his four in head to head races last cross country season.

Realistically, the two are 1a and 1b for the Carroll Chargers who enter the season as a favorite for a top 5 finish. Harper has loads of talent and had an excellent track season this past Spring.

I would expect Harper to vastly improve upon his 2011 State Meet finish and an All-State finish in 2012 is a strong probability.

19. Alex Hess – Sr. – Carroll (Fort Wayne)

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 17th Place – 15:56.3

2010 State Finals Finish – 157th Place – 17:38.6

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 4×800 Relay – 1st place – 7:41.29

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) 15:56.3 – IHSAA State Meet – 10/31/11

Bio:

As far as returners for the 2012 State Meet, Hess fans may feel slightly insulted seeing him ranked here. He finished 17th as a Junior in 2011 and returns as the 5th best runner from the State Meet results alone.

We should expect to see another All-State performance from Alex, but hoping for a top 10 might be slightly ambitious from a pure numbers standpoint. While PR’s are overrated and racing is key, Hess has not yet thrown down the times you would expect from someone ranked higher.

Part of this is Hess’ dedication to the Fort Wayne Carroll Charger State Champion 4×800 Relay team this year. Individual accomplishments were put on hold last track season. There is no doubt Hess COULD have run close to 4:15 and 9:20 if he needed, but the ring spoke louder.

We still shouldn’t be surprised to see some “Hess Magic” come this October. We all know better to doubt him based on the family history.

20. Jonathan Reynolds – Sr. – North Harrison

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 36th Place – 16:12.4

2010 State Finals Finish – 39nd Place – 16:17.1

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 1600 – 20th Place –  4:24.59

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) 15:34.9 – Brown County Semi State 10/23/10

1600 – 4:20.13 – IHSAA State Finals 6/3/10

Bio:

2011-2012 wasn’t as kind to Jonathan as he would have liked. As a sophomore in 2010, Jonathan ran excellent PR’s across the board. In 2011 he took a small step back but was still solid and consistent as always. North Harrison won’t be the powerhouse they have been the last few years in 2012 so Reynolds will need to put the team on his shoulders and take that “next step”. The talent is surely there for a top 10 finish. The question will be, “How will he react to losing the Guy brothers as training partners?”

21. Chandler Ball– Sr. – Lawrence Central

XC

2011 State Finals Finish – 31th Place – 16:07.5

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 1600 – 15th Place –  4:20.92

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) 16:07.5 – IHSAA State Finals 10/31/11

1600 – 4:20.92 – IHSAA State Finals 6/2/11

Bio:

You might as well call him Chandler “Crunch-Time” Ball. Ball completed a good 2011 XC season with a great State Meet, pulling off the rare “State Meet P.R.” and finishing a surprising 31st in the process. He would turn out to be the key to Lawrence Central’s impressive 5th place finish.

Ball mirrored that “crunch-time” characteristic again this past track season, setting his 1600 personal best of 4:20.92 at the State Meet, finishing 15th overall.

Watch for Ball to continue to improve and prove one of the most consistent runners on an excellent 2012 Lawrence Central team.

3200 – 9:43.28 – Indiana Runner Distance Showcase – 2/4/2012

Bio:

Damon Pruett burst onto the scene in 2011 and proved that Connor Sorrells wasn’t the only name to remember out of small Barr-Reeve High School. Damon ran an excellent at the Brown County Semi-State and carried it over with a fantastic 37th place finish at the State Finals.

He’s a little better on grass than on the track at this point, but judging by his improvements this past track season, I think it’s safe to say that Damon will be even more successful this XC season.

23. Zack Snider – So. – Brebeuf Jesuit High School

2012 Track Season:

State Finals: 20th – 3200 meters – 9:23.86 – 6/2/2012

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:59.8 – FlashRock Invitational – 9/17/2011

3200 – 9:23.86 – IHSAA State Meet – 6/2/2012

Bio:

Zack is poised to be all the buzz around Indiana High School running for the next three years. He showed his rare talent while competing as a Freshman this past year for the Braves.

Unfortunately for Zack, he was a victim of the tough Brebeuf Regional last year. He finished a disappointing 18th as the Braves were unable to qualify for the Semi-State as a team.

Luckily, he has a lot of good things working for him this season. 1) He is better. He ran an excellent personal best this track season of 9:23.86 for 3200 meters. 2) The Regional/Semi-State graduated a lot of good Senior athletes 3) The Brebeuf Regional tension was eased up a bit as perennial contender, Zionsville, was moved to Ben Davis.

It still won’t be easy to get out of the Regional and Semi-State. It looks as through there are approximately 10 runners ahead of him at the moment. Then again, don’t count out Snider if he continues to improve as most Freshmen are expected to. If he can survive the path to Terre Haute, look for him to show up big on the big stage.

2011 State Finals Finish – 86th Place – 16:45.8 – 10/29/2011

2010 State Finals Finish – 197th  Place  – 20:01.5 – 10/30/2010

2012 Track Season:

Valparaiso Regional: 8th Place – 3200 meters – 10:10.05 – 5/24/2012

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:56 – New Prairie Invitational – 9/17/2011

3200 – 9:29.47 – West Lafayette Relays – 4/21/2012

Bio:

Peyton Reed will take on an even bigger role for the New Prairie Semi State favorite, Valparaiso Vikings, after the team has now graduated Ahmad Aljobeh. Reed prepared for that role very well, boasting an excellent track season in 2012. He ran a big personal best in the 3200 and was the team’s most consistent runner all season. He was competitive all season long before a bad timed off race knocked him out of what looked to be All-State contentions in the 3200.

Reed will join teammate Ari Coulopoulos up front, as the team boasts one of the best 1/2 punches in the State. Whenever you’re able to train with a group as good as the 2012 Vikings will be, it bodes well for the upcoming season.

25. Colin Rinne – Jr. – Westfield High School

XC

2011 Semi-State Finals Finish – 16th Place – 15:59.9

2012 Track Season

State Finish : 4×800 Relay – 16th place – 8:03.94

Personal Bests:

5k (XC) – 15:44.5 – Brown County Eagle Classic- 9/10/11

3200 – 9:49.88 – Zionsville Invitational 4/27/12

Bio:

Rinne was one of the most unlucky runners in the State last October, drawing the dreaded 16th place finish at the Carmel Semi-State Meet.

The good news is that he was just a Sophomore, and his improvement from his first to his second year was amazing. In 2011, Rinne ran under 16 minutes in all but one meet in 2011, bettering his 2010 Freshman mark of 16:20.

Rinne spent most of his 2012 Track season helping the Shamrocks qualify for the State Championship in the 4×800 relay. Because of this, his 3200 times suffered. Too much stock shouldn’t be put into this. Look for Rinne to trade off front running duties again this year with teammate Kyle Duvall as they both are poised for All-State finishes.
