Coaching Philosophy

Of Track and Field

And

Cross Country

By:  Coach Bill Welch

Our coaching philosophy in track and field and cross country deals with an open, trustful, honest and frequent communication between the coaches and the student athletes.

our main goal is help the student athlete to reach his or her goals and meet his or her individual and the team potential. To help the student athlete to be  a better person physically, mentally and socially when he or she leaves our school than when he or she came to us.

To help the student athlete to develop and improve, not only their running, but, also their confidence, self-esteem and high belief in themselves. To help the student athlete to develop qualities that will help them to be prepared for life after the education and experience in athletics they have been exposed to at our school.

The coaching will be as good as the attitude of the student athlete’s willingness to learn and develop; and try new things, and the quality of the feedback of the student athlete.

Let it be understood we want to help the student athlete to climb as high as the student athlete wants to climb. We feel we have the knowledge, the teaching ability and the motivation to guide the student athlete to great levels of achievement. The student athlete’s success is our success.

We believe in:

. Challenging, realistic and reachable goals

. Mutual and honest feedback

. Continuous learning and improvement

. Gradual, progressive, stair-step improvement

. Smart organized training

. Patience to develop and improve

. Achievement

. Aggressiveness and competitiveness

. Mental preparation

. Focusing in on practice and competition

. Everyone being a contributor to a team concept but providing room for individualism.

. In moral and ethical character

. In good leadership and responsibility

. The continual development of the individual and the team potential.

. Most of all we believe in a great attitude

We do not believe in:

. Miracles

. Overtraining

. Injuries

. Hit and miss type of attendance or hit and miss type of practice/

. A must to win at all cost or an evaluation depending upon winning.

. In just participating, but being an important part of and a contributor to the team.

. Lack of pride in oneself and the team.

We believe in coaching that is:

. Enthusiastic

. Motivational

. Individualized but within a team and group concept.

. Realistic and challenging goals

. Goal driven

. Performance oriented

. Closely monitored

. Flexible but disciplined

. Well rounded

. The training that will lead to the achievement of goals both individually and team

We should always, the student athlete and coaches, be striving to be our best. We should have the philosophy of what can we do to make us better?

We should do the things it takes to become better, do them as well as we can, when we need to do them, and as long as it takes to do them.

Together: we should evaluate our training plan.

Together: we should assess our ability

Together: we should have mutual goal-setting

Together; we should plan our training that is goal-oriented

Together: we should develop our mental preparation.

Together: we should have honest, beneficial feedback.

Above all the coaching staff and the teacher should be there for the student athlete.
