Below you will find this past week’s IHSAA Sectional top performances for both boys and girls. On the boys side, fans are in for a treat in the 300 hurdles and 400m in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the girls sprints should be a great battle as returning National Champion Brionna Thomas fights off her contenders.

Boys Top 10 Best Sectional Performances:

10. Brebeuf’s Matt Lang finishes a devastating 5th place in the 800/1600 while still running PR’s in both (1:58.38/4:21.27).

9. Noblesville’s 4×800 Relay runs 7:55.98 for second at the Carmel Sectional behind Fishers with relatively no star-power. If you live outside the Indy area, (and maybe even if you do) you probably don’t know any of these names…

Noblesville ‘A’ 7:55.98 8
1) 199 Sellers, John 12 2) 187 Hendricks, Chris 12
3) 190 Lemna, Joe 11 4) 205 Waterman, Josh 12
5) 194 Needler, Andrew 11 6) 184 Gervase, Stephen 11
7) 204 Warne, Jordan 10 8) 192 Marowski, Kyle 11

8. Hamilton Southeastern’s 4×400 Relay wins the Carmel Sectional in a State Best time, 3:17.68.

7. XC State Champ Connor Sorrells wins the Princeton Sectional 3200 in 9:15 by 42 seconds over Barr Reeve teammate Damon Pruett.

6. Penn’s Tommy Grant wins the Penn Sectional 100m title in a state best time, 10.53.

5. Hamilton Southeastern’s Jacob Wright double wins the 110/300 hurdles in 14.17 and 37.40.

4. Trevor Stanley (Homestead), Zach Reitzug (HSE), Conner Stapleton (Center Grove), and Devon Stone (Ft. Wayne Wayne) along with Wright run times capable of earning them a spot on the top 25 all-time list in the 300 hurdles (Stanley 37.45, Reitzug 37.52, Stapleton 37.55, Stone 37.71). Reitzug has already ran 37.02 this year.

3. Matt Dorsey leads three big personal bests in the 800 at the North Central Sectional. Dorsey, doubling off a 1600 win would finish in 1:52.69, followed by Lawrence North’s Joe Murphy (1:52.99), and Lawrence Central’s Adam Turner (1:54.33).

2. Hamilton Southeastern’s Ryan Davis sets another 2013 personal best at 400 meters, clocking a 47.36 in the Carmel Sectional. The State Meet Record is 46.99, set in 2002 by Merrillville’s David Neville.

1. Lafayette Jefferson shows sprint domination at the Jeff Sectional. They would finish first and second in the 100 (Matthew Johnson 10.61/Lucas Wallace 10.83) and 200 (Wallace 21.23 and Carl McQuay 21.34) along with running a state best 41.56 in the 4×100 Relay.

Girls Top 10 Best Sectional Performances

10. Terre Haute North’s Kierra Porter jumps a personal best 18′ 8″ to win the South Putnam Sectional Long Jump.

9. Fort Wayne Northrop’s Dejah Arnold runs a state best 55.92 to with her home Sectional 400m title.

8. Noblesville’s Rachel Mather jumps a personal best and equals state best 12’6″ in the pole vault for the win at the Guerin Sectional.

7. Martinsville’s Liz Iversen throws a personal best 47′ 3.75″ in the shot put to win the Bloomington North Sectional and put her second on the season best list.

6. Columbus North’s Mackenzie Caldwell is a double winner at the Franklin Community Sectional. She would win the 1600 (5:01) by 12 seconds, and the 3200 (10:58) by 26 seconds.

5. Greencastle’s Colleen Weatherford steals the state best from Terre Haute North Freshman Lindsay Welker in the 800. She would win in 2:12.56 coming off a double after her 1600m win.

4. Bellmont’s Alexis Harvey gets the win in the 200 over National Champion Brionna Thomas in the New Haven Sectional

3. FW Concordia’s Symone Black is a double winner in the 100/300 hurdles at the Northrop Sectional. She would win both events in state best times (14.36/43.08).

2. South Bend Clay’s Amanda Farrough takes down National Champion Anna Rohrer in the 1600 at the Bremen Sectional. Farrough would run a personal best 5:02.60 while Rohrer would come back to win her signature event, the 3200 later in the meet.

1. Team Domination: Eastern (Greentown) wins the Madison-Grant Sectional, scoring 107 of their 125 points with just 5 athletes while Lawrence Central wins their home Sectional by 104 points over Bishop Chatard 197-93.

Tuesday afternoon marked the official start of the IHSAA State Tourament for Track and Field. The Eastern (Greentown) girls track team wasted no time showing how dominant they can be, even with an school enrollment of just 460 athletes.

The Lady Comets won the Madison-Grant Sectional in rare fashion. It wasn’t just that they had won by 40 points over Kokomo, who has an enrollment of 1960 as well as Northwestern. The astonishing statistic is that 107 of their 125 points were scored by just 5 girls.

Senior twin stand-outs Brittany and Bethany Neeley each won their signature events, the 800 and 1600 respectively. Both are considered favorites to compete for the State titles in those events.

Sarah Wagner though was actually the big scorer of the evening. Wagner showed her versatility, winning the high jump and 3200 while also placing 3rd in the 1600 and being a member of the championship 4×800. In total, she led the Lady Comets in scoring with 28.5 points.

Previously mentioned Neeley girls both scored 25 points, each winning their two individual events (Brittany 400/800 and Bethany 1600/300h) and also as key legs on the team’s championship 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

Sophomore Avery Ewing was next in scoring. She scored 15.5 points as she was second in 400 and fifth in the 200. She also was a member of the winning 4×400 relay.

Last but not least, Freshman Jessica Sprinkles scored 13.5 points, competing on both winning relays and also finishing second in the 800.

As if the scoring wasn’t enough for the Eastern girls, they also broke four Sectional records en route to the win. Bethany Neeley set the sectional record in 300 hurdles, winning 44.40. Brittany, meanwhile won the 800 in a record 2:13.50. Also, both relay teams set new records as their winning times were 4:03.10 (4×400) and 9:32.60 (4×800) respectively.

Next up for the Eastern ladies is the tough Fort Wayne Northop Regional. Competition is set to start at 6 pm on Tuesday, May 21st.

Friday’s Franklin Central Showcase is set to be one of the most competitive we have seen. The boy’s race features just about all the big dogs you would hope to see. The only major individuals that we’re really disappointed aren’t running are Zach Panning (FW Concordia), Kyle Eller (Lowell), Ari Coulopoulos (Valparaiso), and James Huffman (North Central). There are still 14 of the top 20 individuals at this past fall’s cross country state finals including the top five individuals returning from last year’s state meet 1600 final.

The schedule for Friday’s meet which also includes boys and girls’ 4×800′s and 4×400′s as well as the prestigious Freshman Miracle Mile is below.

Schedule of Events
6:00 PM Boys’ Freshmen Mile – Heat 1
6:15 PM Boys’ Freshmen Mile – Heat 2 (Fast)
6:30 PM Girls’ 4×800 Relay
6:50 PM Boys’ 4×800 Relay
7:10 PM Girls’ 4×400 Relay
7:30 PM Boys’ 4×400 Relay
7:45 PM Girls’ Mile – Heat 1
8:00 PM Boys’ Mile – Heat 1
8:15 PM Girls’ Mile – Heat 2
8:30 PM Boys’ Mile – Heat 2
8:45 PM Girls’ Mile – Heat 3 (Fast)
9:00 PM Boys’ Mile – Heat 3 (Fast)

We will focus our preview on the elite mile championships and also touch on the freshman mile a little. The relays are hard to predict because of the top dogs competing in the Miracle Mile races.

5 Morgan Township – Ben Savage

6 Carroll (FW) – Cameron Clements

7 Westfield – Sam Henthorn

8 Zionsville Community – Oliver Rigg

9 Center Grove – Reed Sauter

10 Avon High School – Alec Scheerer

11 Westfield – Alec Hartman

12 Warsaw Community – Owen Golglovsky

13 Avon High School – Matt Everling

14 Carmel High School – Thomas Revard

17 Zionsville Community – Kyle Munz

18 South Bend St. Joseph – Matt Morris

19 Columbus North – Ben Rankin

20 Northwood – Mason Pippenger

The big names to watch in the freshman mile are Homestead’s Brayden Law, Barr-Reeve’s Jarit Perkins, Carroll’s Cameron Clements, Carmel’s Ben Veatch, Morgan Townships’ Ben Savage, Zionsville’s Oliver Rigg, and North Oldham (KY)’s Trenton Fryman. Those seven individuals (and possibly a few others) can even threaten the 4:30 barrier if the race is quick enough. Law, Perkins, Clements, and Veatch were all stand-outs this past XC season with Veatch finishing an impressive 27th at the State Meet. Savage is an up and coming runner who’s potential seems to be relatively untapped. Kentucky’s Trenton Fryman could steal the show, however, as he ran a blazing 4:39.90 at the Indiana Runner Distance Showcase in February.

2012 Freshman Mile Results:

1 Ethan Hoeft Lawrence North 4:35.21
2 Xavier Martinez Bloomington South 4:36.41
3 Peter Davis Terre Haute North 4:37.05
4 Chase LaBonne Fishers HS 4:40.08
5 Nick Butler Fishers HS 4:40.65

Boys Miracle Mile Heat 1:

1 Westfield – Colin Rinne

2 Center Grove – Jacob Cushing

3 Bloomington South – Jordan Huntoon

4 Terre Haute South – Logan Hambrock

5 Corydon Central – Levi Taylor

6 Terre Haute South – Riley Stohler

7 Avon – Conner Voth

8 Franklin Central – Austin Presnell

9 Avon – Presley Martin

10 Lawrence North – Robel Teklezghi

11 Hamilton Southeastern – Greg Murphy

12 Hamilton Southeastern – Stephen Cho

13 Carmel – Michael George

14 Carmel – Josh Horowitz

The great thing about these smaller heats are that the slower two heats have a chance to really work together and lay down some fast times to threaten a podium spot. While all the athletes in this section are talented, the race should be between Center Grove’s Jacob Cushing, Westfield’s Colin Rinne, and Terre Haute South’s Logan Hambrock. Cushing ran 4:26.06 at last year’s MIC Meeet while Hambrock has been under 4:27 on numerous occasions. If it’s possible to be the favorite and the unknown at the same time, Rinne is probably that. We all know how talented he has proven himself to be in the longer distances and during XC, but he did run quite a bit of mid-distance this indoor season. Bloomington South’s Jordan Huntoon is another one to watch in this heat. He may have the best leg speed of the bunch as he boasts an 800 personal best of 1:57.25.

Boys Miracle Mile Heat 2:

1 North Harrison – Jonathon Reynolds

2 SCRATCH

3 LaPorte – Anthony Didion

4 Warsaw Community – Robert Murphy

5 Lawrence North – Joe Murphy

6 New Prairie – Nick Arndt

7 Lawrence Central – Adam Turner

8 Carmel – Robert Browning

9 Lawrence Central – Cole Hester

10 Plainfield – Abiel Mogos

11 Western – Matt Grider

12 Bloomington South – Kyle Burks

13 Franklin Central – Shane Wright

14 Avon – Taylor Kleyn

The second section is anyone’s guess. Most likely to find themselves up front late are North Harrison’s Jonathan Reynolds, LaPorte’s Anthony Didion, and Lawrence North’s Joe Murphy. Others who could contend include the Lawrence Central duo (Turner/Hester), Bloomington South’s Kyle Burks, and Plainfield’s late bloomer, Abiel Mogos who had a great indoor season. Reynolds could be considered the favorite here as he ran 4:20.13 in the 2011 State Finals to finish 14th overall. He also may have the most big race experience of anyone.

Boys Miracle Mile Heat 3:

1 Hamilton Southeastern – Troy Reeder

2 Warsaw Community – Jacob Poyner

3 Holy Cross (KY) – Jacob Thomson

4 Lawrence Central – Matt Dorsey

5 Barr-Reeve – Connor Sorrells

6 Warsaw Community – Ellis Coon

7 Butler (KY) – Patrick Gregory

8 Carroll (FW) – Jon Harper

9 Carroll (FW) – Alex Hess

10 Mooresville – Michael Passmore

11 Terre Haute South – Jackson Bertoli

12 Westfield – Kyle DuVall

13 Brebeuf – Zack Snider

14 Carmel – Daniel Williams

15 Zionsville Community – Ryan Conrad

16 Morgan Township – Alec Kostelnik

The sixteen athletes in the fast section are just flat out fast. We could write for days on the accomplishments of these athletes. The field is really highlighted by Holy Cross’ Jacob Thomson, a multiple time state champion from Kentucky and Footlocker XC finalist. If any part of Thomson’s resume looks suspect, it might be his legspeed, as he has “only” run around 1:57 for 800 meters.

The IR fans seem to think that Matt Dorsey is the favorite to challenge Thomson for the win (see message board poll HERE). That might be accurate as he had a great indoor season, breaking Mike Fout’s indoor state 1600 record and running a converted 4:12.95 1600 from New Balance Indoor Nationals.

We think that people seem to be forgetting that Troy Reeder was the state runner up at last year’s IHSAA State Finals in 4:09.60. Reeder is a savvy racer and has a devastating finish. Reeder might actually be the favorite in our eyes. Also not to be forgotten about are the Warsaw duo of Jacob Poyner and Ellis Coon. Both of which came off hot indoor seasons and have been training together with one goal between the two of them; a state championship.

Last but not least of the contenders should be Barr-Reeve’s Connor Sorrells. People seem to forget about just how good of a miler Sorrells actually is due to his success as the XC state champ and his 9:01 3200 performance at state last spring. He did run a personal best 4:15.85 though last year in mid-April before deciding to focus on 3200 for the State Tournament.

One storyline to watch here away from the previously mentioned individuals is Brebeuf’s Zack Snider. Snider, just a sophomore, ran 9:06 at last weekend’s prestigious Arcadia Invitational and should be ready for massive mile personal best.

Girls Franklin Central Showcase Preview

By Colin Altevogt

The Miracle Mile at Franklin Central once again boasts a deep field of decorated athletes. Between the three heats, 18 girls have earned All-State status at some point in their high school careers. Throw in four out-of-state runners, including one that has broken the five minute barrier in the last year, and this season’s group has strong potential to be the best in meet history. Get ready to rewrite the leaderboards.

Heat One

Traditionally a race filled with emerging rather than established elite runners, the first heat still has some All-State talent in the race. Rochester’s Anna Bearss finished in the top 25 in the state cross country meet her sophomore year while running for Warsaw. Also, juniors Brianna Leonard and Shelby Wilson are state meet veterans from their time on Westfield’s cross country teams and 4×8 relays. Eastern’s Sarah Wagner has two great training partners on a daily basis who we will see in the fastest heat. A darkhorse pick could be Carmel’s Gabi Stephens who has never been on the ‘Hounds varsity before this season in either cross or track but has run 11:23 for 3200 meters already.

Heat Two

A pair of All-State runners highlight this field as well. Terre Haute North’s Chanli Mundy is a perennial individual state qualifier and has frequently been among the very elite, although more often in the fall than the spring. Carmel’s Gina Genco, a junior, has thrice been All-State in cross country and brings speed to match; she was the alternate on the ‘Hounds state champion 4×800 relay in 2012. Plainfield sophomore Samantha Woodford was also All-State in cross country and has recorded one of the top ten times in the 3200 thus far in the track season.

North Harrison sophomore Ashton Bosler and Carmel senior Ellen Schmitz were individual qualifiers in the 1600 to last year’s state finals. Schmitz was 26th at the state cross country meet and anchored the ‘Hounds distance medley relay indoors. Zionsville’s Becca

viagra price

Uedele has the best time of all second heat runners in the 1600 this season at 5:15. Carmel sophomore Rachel Weesner, who rarely gets to see varsity action due to the team’s depth, was the winner of the third heat last year in 5:15 at this meet.

Heat Three

Eastern senior Bethany Neeley is the returning winner from last year’s meet and the defending state champion. There will be a runner from Kentucky with a 4:56 PR, but the most exciting race looks to be between Neeley and national cross country champion Anna Rohrer of Mishawaka. Rohrer, a sophomore, has run 10:26 indoors for 3200 meters. It seems like a battle of endurance vs. speed. Can Rohrer use her superior strength to take the sting out of Neeley’s kick?

The rest of the field isn’t too bad either. Greencastle senior Colleen Weatherford, perhaps more of an 800 meter runner, was fourth at the state finals in 4:57 last June. Hamilton Southeastern sophomore Rachel Nichwitz was second to Neeley in this race last year in 5:02, and she qualified for the state meet on the Royals 4×800 relay as well as the 1600 and 800 individually. Another 800 specialist, Brittany Neeley of Eastern, looks to be in the mix. A 1-2 finish for the twins from Eastern is not out of the question.

That still is not all. Center Grove senior Tori Schoettmer has finished runner-up at the state meet in this event and was All-State in both the 1600 and 3200 last year. Columbus North senior Rachael Sollman, a Xavier recruit, was fourth at the state finals a few years ago before concentrating on the 4×8 more recently. Juniors Kelcy Welch of Carmel and Mackenzie Caldwell of Columbus North look to renew their rivalry that has resulted in multiple podium finishes in cross country or track. Noblesville senior Kendra Foley was the champion going away at the Indiana Runner distance showcase in February. Perry Meridian’s Kieran Casey and Bloomington South’s Alex Warzyniak are also past All-State milers. Cathedral sophomore Emma MacAnally was a state finalist in the 1600 last year and finished 15th at the state cross country meet.

Oh, and the Kentucky state champions in 800 and 1600 will be in the race.

One of the most anticipated events in the state is set to take place Friday, April 12th at Franklin Central High School. The FC Showcase and “Miracle Mile” is always a top notch event.

The big change in this years’ event will be the addition of a third heat to both the girls and boys mile races. This should allow more athletes to compete for faster times and not get shuffled out of the race early.

The fields are stacked, led by State Champion Connor Sorrells, #1 ranked Miler Troy Reeder, among others on the boys side. On the girls side, Footlocker Champion Anna Rohrer will face up against State Champion Bethany Neeley. We will release more in-depth previews of the races early this week.

Indiana Runner will also be doing a LIVE webcast of the races for those who can’t make it. For now, here are the entries:

The 2013 Hoosier State Relays (HSR) Finals held at Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday, March 16th, 2013 were just as exciting as was promoted going in to the meet.

The meet, held annually and promoted as the unofficial “Indoor State Championships”, featured the top 24 athletes and relays in the 55m Dash, 55m Hurdles, 3200m Run, High Jump, Long Jump, Pole Vault, Shot Put, 4x200m Relay, 4x400m Relay, 4x800m Relay, and Distance Medley Relay.

The competition is split into two divisions, the “small school” division (1a-3a) and “big school” (4a-5a) division. An explanation of those teams competing in each division can be found HERE:

Early Saturday morning, the 4a-5a division took to the track to settle the champions of their indoor seasons. Later in the afternoon, the 1a-3a division would follow those performances up with some impressive ones of their own.

A short recap of each event is below:

Boys 55m Dash

Deontre Gray of Lawrence Central lived up to his #1 seed entering competition on Saturday. As you can see, the top 6 placers were separated by just .06 seconds. Of note Penn High School was able to qualify two athletes for the final which should speak very highly of their chances in the 4x100m relay this outdoor season. The biggest surprise in this race was LaPorte’s Scott Schreiber who qualified for the final and scored 2 points for the Slicers despite being one of the last seeds in the meet.

The sophomore from Brebeuf, LeVante Bellamy, showed that he has a very bright future in front of him, winning in a personal best time of 6.52 and beating the field by over a tenth of a second. The majority of the damage he did was from 35-55 meters as the entire pack was nearly even at 30 meters. Bellamy showed excellent explosiveness out of the blocks but didn’t execute his drive phase as well as some of the other athletes. Connor Stouder was the big winner of the day, pulling out a surprising 2nd place finish. He should be a name to watch this outdoor season. His slight frame should allow for a lot of growth and speed development as the season and his career (collegiately) continues.

Boys 55m Hurdles

Controversial would be the word to use to describe this boys hurdle final. The final was actually run twice so-to-speak. In the initial final, Max Leamer of Fishers was the first to cross the finish line in 7.57. During the race, however, both Adrian Mable of FW South Side and Andrew Kittridge of Valparaiso fell over the fourth hurdle. Both athletes got back up and finished, though they were very far behind, obviously. The official ruled that the hurdles were overlapping each other and the falls were deemed an “equipment malfunction”. Less than an hour later, a decision was made to allow Kittridge and Mable to run again, in a separate final…alone. Kittridge was placed in lane 4 while Mable was in 6. Each athlete had space on either side of them and no athletes to potentially impede their progress. As a result, Mable ran the time shown above, which was counted as the winning time when combined with the earlier final. Fishers representatives and fans were obviously confused by the end result as were we, however, the officials upheld the decision and Mable was named the HSR Champion.

The 1a-3a 55 hurdle final wasn’t nearly as controversial luckily. Grant Stamm showed who was boss in this competition, winning convincingly in 7.65. His form and poise in the prelim and final looked very strong. Stamm was seeded second behind Gibson coming in, so it was a great showing for him with the win. Grant Cole of Eastern deserves a lot of credit here as he showed his versatility, and we will talk about him more in the long jump and high jump recaps.

Boys 3200m Run

Looking at the results, the first thing that pops out at you is a 1,2,3 finish by Warsaw Community High School. It was slightly surprising to see the trio dominate like they did, though they were seeded 1,2,4 going into the race. Coon and Poyner traded off the lead in the middle and late portions of the race, and Murphy made his move into third with about 3 laps to go. Entering the last lap, the three were separated by less than a second and it was every man for himself. Coon and Poyner battled while Murphy held on tight up to about 80 meters to go.

It was obvious that Spencer Clapp of Cathedral just didn’t have it today. Clapp was one of the favorites entering the race after running 9:17 in February, and looked to be in form early battling near the front, but ultimately fell well off the pace. James Huffman stayed relatively quiet even in his fourth place finish and personal best run. Reed and Didion also ran personal bests en route to the scoring finishes.

The small school boys 3200 may have been the distance race of the day. Zack Snider was heavily favored going into the race though a few did have Grider and Kostelnik pulling the upset. The pack was out quick and approximately 1200 meters in, Grider put in an impressive surge, opening up a 5+ second gap on Snider and cruising through the mile in 4:35. Up to this point, it is believed that Grider has a 1600 P.R. of just 4:30. Grider continued to push and Snider, who looked a bit shocked, lost contact until late. With 500 to go, Grider began to hurt and by 200 to go, Snider had made a pass and closed his last 200 in 30.6. Snider said after the race that he was a bit surprised at how strong Grider looked. He also talked about his recent commitment to race at the Arcadia 3200 and his goals in the future. He even spoke of an 8:56 attempt at the sophomore all time record, though that may be a bit premature at this point.

We were also able to speak with Grider after the race who said that he just wanted to run his own race and didn’t really pay attention to what Snider was doing. He came across very humble and showed a lot of poise, pushing aside the resumes of Snider and Kostelnik to put the race on his shoulders. He admitted he got a little too aggressive as he only wanted to go out in 4:40, but the big race atmosphere may have gotten the best of him. He also talked post-race about his goal of qualifying for the FC Distance Showcase ‘Miracle Mile’ and seemed disappointed that he had not hit the automatic time. FC Staff: If you’re reading this, sign this tough kid up!

Boys 4×200 Relay

Hamilton Southeastern was able to win the 4×200 relay due in part to their excellent 3rd and 4th legs. The big story here, however, was Plainfield who managed a second place finish out of the third heat. They entered competition with a season best of just 1:33.50 and managed to get a clean track in front of them en route to their 1:31.86. The 4×200 is always an unpredictable event and this race was no exception.

Once again, the clean track showed vital in this competition. Fairfield was able to get out of trouble during their second leg and ran away with the race. Andrean made a hard push with their 3rd and 4th legs but just barely came up short. Once again, we saw a team out of one of the slower heats (2nd) do some damage as Southmont came up with surprising 3rd place finish.

Boys 4×400 Relay

Hamilton Southeastern’s Jacob Wright did some impressive work on this relay to really push the Royals to a big win (nearly 4 seconds). Conner Stapleton of Center Grove was another athlete who had a big leg though the finish was not what the team had hoped.

This race was really Thea Bowman’s from the start. Their first leg led off in a 51.7 followed by a 50.8 for their second. At this point, the meet record looked to be surely going down. Unfortunately, their third and fourth legs were only able to muster 53.X, running alone at that point and missing the record by a little over one second.

Boys 4×800 Relay

Even the 7 second win shown above doesn’t accurately portray how dominant Lawrence Central looked during this race. Adam Turner led off the Bears’ relay in an impressive 1:56.6. Chandler Ball and Cole Hester extended the lead on the third and fourth legs with respective splits of 2:01 and 2:00. When Matt Dorsey was given the baton, the win was already in the bag, and he must have been told by a coach to shut it down and save up for the DMR scheduled for later in the day. Dorsey looked relaxed and brought it home in just over 2:00 to secure the victory. Of note, Danny Williams of Carmel continued what looks to be an excellent senior campaign as he was head hunting during his leg, splitting a outstanding 1:56.3 for what is believed to be the fastest split in the race.

As we discussed pre-race, Guerin Catholic and Eastern just didn’t have the star-power to match up with Brebeuf. Zack Snider led off the Braves with a less-than-inspiring 2:06 handing off around fourth place. His 9:16 3200 obviously left him a little flat. It wasn’t too much to overcome, however, as Brebeuf”s second and third legs secured a big lead that proved to end the race before it was over. Wheeler freshman Joel O’Shea had a notable effort bringing his team into scoring position with a 2:06 anchor leg.

Boys Distance Medley Relay

The Warsaw boys got good legs early from their 1200 (Poyner) and 400 legs. The lead was handed off in 3:09 at the 1200. Robert Murphy was able to extend that lead with a gutsy 1:59 800 leg. Last he would hand off to Ellis Coon who looked uncomfortable from the beginning. Jonathan Harper of Carroll made up the gap quickly and overtook Coon. He would run away with the victory easily. Matt Dorsey of Lawrence Central ran a great last leg passing Coon as well with 100 to go, though Coon was able to summon a little extra and outlast Dorsey to the line. The Royals of Hamilton Southeastern ended up leaving too much work for anchor Troy Reeder to do, as he went out conservative in 2:09 at the 800 but closed at 4:14 for his 1600m leg, moving into fourth. He was notably upset with himself post-race. Plainfield and Valparaiso, anchored by Abiel Mogos (4:27) and Ari Coulopoulos (4:29) scored the last two spots out of the slower heat.

Once again, the Braves of Brebeuf showed their distance superiority, running away with the DMR easily. Going into this event, Eastern had a chance to move up from 6th to 3rd in the team standings if they were able to finish second. Eastern’s anchor gave it all he had but ultimately came up short in 4:42 and fell from third to fourth as Matt Grider ran just under 4:30 to come from way behind.

Boys Long Jump

The long jump as a whole was the story of the day. Athletes in each section came up with some jumps we were not expecting to see coming into competition. Robinson Carrington of FW Wayne came in seeded 5th at just 21’9″ but popped off a huge personal best of 23’3.25 for the win. Devyn Mikell of Avon, a multi-talented athlete in the jumps and sprints also soared over 23 feet for the first time in his career finishing second.

Grant Cole was expected to win the competition in the small school division, but most did not expect him to exceed his previous personal best by over 1 foot. He also missed the all time HSR Record for 1a-3a by just .5 inches.

Boys High Jump

The high jump ended up being a great competition as 11 jumpers went 6’4″ or better. The big winner on the day though was Kenneth Lloyd of East Chicago Central who jumped a personal best 6’10″ and established himself as the man to beat come outdoor season. Richard Freeman, another one of the favorites appeared to be a bit off his game though he was able to salvage a second place finish.

Skyler Peetz of Waldron was the only jumper to really have a great day as he won the competition at 6’5″ before having some good attempts at 6’8″ as well. Grant Cole earned his fourth HSR “All-State” award with his tie for fourth

Boys Pole Vault

Two things should pop out to pole vault fans as they look at these results. The first of which being the emergence of Tony Armstrong of Carroll. He entered the competition seeded at 13’0″ but jumped 14′ 6″ an earned a third place finish. Armstrong did however jump 14′ 9″ last outdoor season as well as 14’7″ at one point this indoor season, so it’s not too much of a surprise. Also, one of the favorites for the win, David Woosley of Evansville Harrison did not make his opening height. This is pretty common as in almost all pole vault competitions, one of the major players will have a rough day.

The small school pole vault went very similar to what we would have expected. The only misnomer was the absence of Malachi Baker of West Lafayette. He did not enter the competition despite being seeded tied for first.

Boys Shot Put

The emergence of Angelo Allen and Kris Davis is the storyline here. Allen has gained nearly a foot on his 2012 best while Davis, who is doing track for the first time since his freshman year, is obviously displaying his amazing talent this early. Cody Hamsley of Floyd Central, a state medalist, had an off day finishing 8th.

Like the small school pole vault, there weren’t really any surprising performances in the shot put either way. The top four were all seeded in the top four going into competition. McClure was expected to dominate the competition, which he did.

Boys Team Competition

Girls 55m Dash

A big shock took place in the girls big school 55m dash. Brionna Thomas, who was double state champ in the 100 and 200 last year as well as National Champion in the 200 (24.11)was beat by North Central’s Jocelyn Miller. The times for the top 4 girls are all fantastic and put them in position to threaten the 12 second barrier outdoors. It will be a great year for the girls sprints. Thomas should still be considered the favorite in the 200 though considering her deadly “long speed” ability.

Symone Black really was a star at the small school HSR meet. She won both the hurdles and the 55 dash with limited rest in between and also ran an important leg on the Concordia 4×200 relay. Still just a junior, Black has a bright future upcoming.

Girls 55m Hurdles

Porter was considered the favorite going into Saturday and didn’t disappoint. Her time of 8.37 was a significant personal best. Just a sophomore, Porter is now one of the two favorites for the outdoor State Championship, and will likely improve on her 12th place finish from 2012. Makelle Skelton of FW Northrop, an established elite 300m hurdler, appears to have done the necessary work this winter to make herself a double threat this spring.

As we noted earlier, the Symone Black bandwagon is full at this point following her double win in the 55 hurdle and 55 dash. Not only that, but Black broke last years’ HSR record set by Taylor Gilles of Wheeler who Black ironically was beat by at this meet. Motivation? Looks like it…

Girls 3200m Run

This one was a race for about 4 laps…at that point, National Champion Anna Rohrer took control and hammered the pace. Caldwell tried the early fast pace but fell apart late in the race to fall to 5th. Maddie Woods ran a fantastic tactical race coming from nowhere at the halfway point to finish 3rd. Rohrer was kind enough to give us an interview after the race and told us that it gave her goosebumps to be announced on the starting line for the first time in a big race as the National Champion.

Not surprisingly, Bobbie Burgess dominated the 3200 from start to finish. No one was able to hang with her pace in the middle portions of the race. About halfway through, it was Meyer, Aldrich, and Hostetler holding on for dear life in a battle of who could slow down less. While that was going one, Madeline Lilly, the freshman from Twin Lakes moved from well back to 4th. Hostetler struggled late but it’s a good sign as she comes back from multiple injuries that she had the confidence to run with the leaders as long as she did.

Girls 4×200 Relay

Lawrence Central upset FW Northrop in the big school girls 4×200. Northrop came in seeded about 1 second faster but LC’s depth and experience was too much to handle. Snider also had a notable performance, scoring out of the second heat in dominating fashion.

As if you couldn’t have guessed, the Symone Black-led Concordia team won, and dominated, the small school 4×200. That would make Black responsible for 40 points for the team. The big surprise here was the Northwestern team out of the second heat. Seeded at just 1:56, they dropped nearly 5 seconds to snag fourth overall.

Girls 4×400 Relay

The 4×400 relay ended up being more hotly contested than we had originally thought. Going in, the meet record of 3:53.77 looked well out of reach. Northrop gave it a scare up to their last leg. Northrop was a surprise winner in the end as they came in seeded nearly four seconds behind both favorites, Lawrence Central and Carmel.

Bellmont did a lot of damage on the team score in the mid distance relays. The Hankerson girls really carried the team on their shoulders and should open some eyes as to their potential at the next level. After leg one of this relay, Bellmont was actually back in the middle of the pack, but they would eventually overtake everyone else and hold off a charging Oak Hill for the win and a solid time.

Girls 4×800 Relay

This race was pretty even throughout until the anchor for Carroll got the baton. Carmel had the lead for most of this relay, but would ultimately finish second.

After seeing West Lafayette hold out their big guns in favor the DMR, it was a foregone conclusion that this race was all but in the bag for the Eastern girls. Even without Sarah Wagner who was predisposed with the high jump, the team did not disappoint. The Neeley sisters held down the 3rd and 4th legs and ran stellar splits of 2:13 and 2:14 respectively to bag the old meet record of 9:41.31 by almost 15 seconds! In addition to that, they beat the big school record as well, which is just icing on the cake.

Girls Distance Medley Relay

Carmel led most of the Distance Medley as Noblesville did their best to stay in contact and give anchor, Kendra Foley a chance. They did just that and with a half mile left, Foley made a big move to close out the winning DMR. Tori Schoettmer of Center Grove did a lot of work on the anchor as well moving up from out of scoring position to third.

Another distance relay, another meet record for the Eastern Greentown girls. It may be a long time until we see either the 4×8 or DMR records touched again. Brittany Neeley ran a great lead off 1200m leg in about 3:43, Sarah Wagner split 2:28 on her 800 leg, and Bethany Neeley ran right around 5:05 to close out this winning team. The team talked to us prior to the race as they were excited about the chance to meet up with the West Lafayette girls. At the time of the 1600 handoff, Burgess of West Lafayette was actually next to Bethany Neeley, but didn’t bite on the early pace set forth by Neeley and just never had the race in her control. Rochester ran a fantastic race, led off by Anna Bearss in about 3:53 for 1200 and Greencastle’s Colleen Weatherford closed her 1600 leg in 5:13 to pull her team in scoring position, passing multiple other teams.

Girls Long Jump

As we mentioned previously, the long jump board was friendly to the jumpers today. Ari Nelson, the pre-competition favorite responded with an excellent jump of 18’7”. Beyond that, nearly everyone set personal bests as 7 girls went over 18 feet. This was one of the top across-the-board competitions.

Another great competition took place in the small school girls long jump. Sophie Meier upset Sierra Brown as both jumped season bests. The usual suspects were up front with the addition of Baylee Mitchell of Western Boone who set a personal best by over a foot to grab 5th place.

Girls High Jump

The girls high jump in the big school division went about as most would have expected. The only exception lay in the multi-talented Alis Marrero of Ben Davis, who jumped a personal best 5’6″. She came into the competition with an all-time best of just 5’2″, but was able to take third place for the Giants.

Janae Moffit was the top tog entering competition and took care of business in competition. Rylee Goldsmith of Batesville recorded a notable season best at 5’4″, besting her seed mark of 5’1″. Otherwise, this competition went very similar to the form chart.

Girls Pole Vault

Rachel Mather came in with a seasonal best of just 11’0″, but really showed up when it mattered, clearing 12’0″ and beating some big names in the process. TaPring Goatee underwhelmed a bit, jumping a foot under her seed mark and only taking 8th place.

Sophie Brown proved why she is regarded as the best pole vaulter in the state, winning the small school competition by nearly 3 feet! The other jumpers fell about where they were expected in the results.

Girls Shot Put

One of the biggest upsets of the day came in the girls shot put. The Lawrence Central duo of Demara Compton and Adriana Brown were looking to go 1/2 in the standings and gain some big points for Lawrence Central. Instead, Brown had a day to forget, throwing over 10 feet under her season best and finishing out of the scoring. Compton, meanwhile, was able to salvage a fifth place finish 6 feet under her best. Briana Radford was able to capitalize on the opportunity and throw a 2 foot personal best to win the competition.

Michaela Hazlewood came in with lofty expectations of possibly breaking Cassandra Wertman’s HSR record, but ultimately fell well short. As a consolation, she still won the competition by 3 feet. Not too bad for a bad day…

Girls Team Competition

The past two weekends were very busy for track and field. In addition to the HSR Qualifying Meets for current Indiana athletes, a plethora of former Hoosier high school athletes competed in the NCAA D1, D2, D3 and the NAIA National Championships.

The vast majority of Indiana’s track and field athletes are now engaging in full competition during this indoor track season.

The ultimate goal for all athletes is to earn a qualifying spot for the 2013 Hoosier State Relays Meet, held at Indiana Wesleyan on March 16th. The HSR Finals have sparked interest in competing indoors among Indiana high school athletes to a whole new level over the course of the last 10 years and in particular the last few years.

A new format for this years’ HSR Finals has been concocted by the folks at the IATCCC. All preliminary (qualifying) competitions will be held between the dates of February 25th and March 12th, 2013. At the end of that period, coaches are instructed to declare any and all of their athletes intending to compete in the finals. The top 24 declared entries in each event will be awarded a spot in the HSR Finals. This will be done for two divisions, the 1A-3A division as well as a separate 4A-5A division. The divisions are based on school attendance.

With the NCAA recognizing a full championship season based on indoor track and field, it’s good that high schools, in Indiana especially, are focusing more on being competitive during this portion of the year. College coaches are able to pinpoint those with the most potential to compete successfully at the collegiate level which can be tough due to the rigors of the lengthy NCAA seasons.

As has been the case in all recent years, the HSR finals will host the following events: 55 dash, 55 hurdles, 3200 meter run, 4×200 relay, 4×400, 4×800, Distance Medley Relay, high jump, long jump, pole vault, and shot put. Although the events are limited, they do provide plenty of excitement and with the addition of the extra relays, show the depth that many Indiana teams have on their roster.

For family, athletes, and friends who are not able to make it to Indiana Wesleyan for the HSR Finals on the 16th, Indiana Runner will be providing a FREE live webcast of the event for the second consecutive year. IR will be present through the day for both the small school and big school competitions. More information on the webcast will be released the week of the HSR Finals.
