Justin Hays Training Blog – 9/3/2012 – Artesian Classic
Hello everyone! I hope everyone had a great race this weekend. There were some really fast times being thrown down! I had a great week of training, and was ready to run my first 5k. Here is how my week looked:
Monday 8/27: AM – 4 miles easy
PM – 8 miles moderate at 6:35 pace and Core workout
12 miles total
Tuesday 8/28: Long run at Eagle Creek Park, 11 miles at 6:55 pace
Wednesday 8/29: 1 mile W/U 5 mile tempo at 5:40 pace and 2 mile C/D 8 miles total… This tempo was a lot more controlled one, and it was also the longest tempo run I’ve ever done. I felt really good so I settled in to my pace and just cruised.
Thursday 8/30: Cross Training in the pool for 40 minutes and Core workout
Friday 8/31: AM: 5 miles easy with the team and 3×30 second strides
Saturday 9/1: Artesian Classic.. 2 mile W/U 5k in 16:36… got tenth place which my goal was top ten so I was happy.. time wasn’t what I was hoping for at all. It was a great first race and my legs felt great. This was a really well run meet, and the course was great. 3 mile C/D 8 miles total
Sunday 9/2: 8 miles easy at 6:45 pace
Week Total: 52 miles

This summer I was able to go to the Culver Academy Distance Camp, and it was one of the best experience I’ve ever had. First off we had some of the best mentors around: Connor Martin, Kyle Walsh, Dana Neer, Alex Banfich, and Waverly Neer. They taught me so much about running and life. We were also lucky enough to have Frank Shorter guest speak. Frank is a gold medalist and legend. Every meal he had at camp, he left sitting with the adults to come sit with us guys. We became Frank’s “posse”. He would answer any questions we had about running including Pre. At camp I met so many people that I consider best friends. We all clicked the minute we got to camp, and pretty much had the time of our lives. We have the record for the most people in one dorm room, which included mattresses on top of dressers and under bunk beds. We also stayed up all hours of the night playing a game that should be an olympic sport. Shout out to the “fourth floor” bros: Graham Martin, Kyle Duvall, Devon Fuson, Jackson Bertoli, Jarod “Big J” Fuson, Quinn Reinhardt, Landrum Neer, Ellis Coon, Craig Schildmeier, Jake Cohen, Logan Hambrock, Garrett Burns, Kody Detter, and Frank Shorter. That was definitely the most fun I have ever had in my life. All the best times at camp included Kyle, Devon, and I getting lost at the Indiana Dunes for three hours. We probably ran around 15 miles or more. It all went wrong when a guy at the beach told us the wrong directions. It was a miserable experience at the time, but there is no better way to become best friends with people than that. I recommend this camp to anyone and everyone!
Good luck to everyone this weekend!
