Caleb Kerr Training Blog 5/23/2012 – Sectional Week

Caleb Kerr - Sr. - Evansville North H.S.

Finally the state tournament is rolling around and so are my legs. Workouts and runs are starting to get shorter and faster and I feel more and more smooth during 400 repeats. Not much more strength work from here, but there’s a lot of sharpening left to be done. At the Sectional, I definitely felt much faster during the 4×8. Originally the team goal was to go for the record of 8:08, but we got off to a bad start and by the time I was on the track we were at 6:17 or so. I got the handoff in 3rd place, about 6 seconds behind the teams from Reitz and Memorial. I thought it would take a herculean effort to run the other guys down, but surprisingly I caught them before we got through the first lap. I felt good, so I just went around them and tried to hold the same pace through the next 200. I hammered the backstretch and the last turn, then I could tell that I had the race in the bag and we were well off the record so I backed off a little. I ran a 1:57-high split which was a 2 second 800 PR and I was very satisfied with the time. The 3200 was a bit rougher, I felt good for the first mile, but when Tyler made a surge at 2k, I could feel my legs start going out from under me. I also had some cramps from the food that I ate before the race (which was a really bad idea). I ended up finishing in 9:24, which was actually faster than I expected the way I felt. I’m pretty confident going into next week. My goals are to qualify the 4×8 to state if possible and go under 9:10 in the 3200 and be in contention for the win. Unfortunately some kind of stomach virus has been going around in the house and my health is a bit of a concern, but the goal remains the same no matter how I feel.
