#40 Southport Cardinals
Carmel Semistate #15
State finals history: Five appearances (last in 1992), two podium finishes (last in 1982), one state championship (1981)
2009 Results
Ben Davis Sectional: 2nd place (59 points)
Ben Davis Regional: 5th place (119 points)
Carmel Semistate: 13th place (344 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Semistate)
Emily Odle (12) – 20:23 (52nd place)
Kelly Hodges (12) – 20:33 (59th place)
Brooke Gagliola (11) – 21:40 (104th place)
Katy White (12) – 21:56 (119th place)
Taylor Zorman (10) – 22:28 (130th place)
Outlook: Many of the Cardinals’ runners had great spring seasons and should be looking to continue that into the fall. Southport brings back five of last year’s seven, but four of those five were much improved in the track season. The Cards qualified for the state finals in the 4x8, Odle ran 11:42 for 3200 meters and Hodges was a 5:20 miler. Senior Katy White and sophomore Taylor Zorman will be key.
#39 Culver Academy Eagles
New Prairie Semistate #8
State finals history: Five appearances (last in 2009)
2009 Results
Culver Academy Sectional: 1st place (35 points)
Culver Academy Regional: 1st place (44 points)
New Prairie Semistate: 5th place (175 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 19th place (410 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Prairie Semistate)
Waverly Neer (12) – 19:04 (5th place)
Kaye Sitterley (12) – 20:33 (34th place)
Emma Pettinga (10) – 21:31 (81st place)
Katie Gawor (11) – 23:04 (118th place)
Outlook: The Eagles have lost a good amount from last year’s state finalist team. However, Culver does return one of the state’s best in Waverly Neer, which should give the Eagles a low stick in every meet. Couple that frontrunning with Culver’s knack for getting it done in October—the Eagles have been to five of the last six state finals—and the team could find itself in Terre Haute if it can get some help in developing its depth.
#38 Warsaw Tigers
New Haven Semistate #11
State finals history: One appearance (1999)
2009 Results
Elkhart Central Sectional: 2nd place (41 points)
Elkhart Central Regional: 3rd place (82 points)
New Haven Semistate: 10th place (232 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Haven Semistate)
Ashley Erba (10) – 18:57 (1st place)
Brooke Kline (11) – 21:22 (62nd place)
Creigh Ogle (11) – 22:21 (106th place)
Lilly Fleming (11) – 22:42 (115th place)
Outlook: The Tigers have one of the state’s best as a frontrunner as well as four of seven from last season’s top ten semistate team. Kline could be key for Warsaw as she had a great season over 3200 meters, winning the sectional championship in the event. Behind Erba and Kline, the Tigers need to develop depth for a shot at a team trip to the state meet, something they haven’t done since 1999.
#37 Angola Hornets
New Haven Semistate #10
West Noble Regional #5
State finals history: Two appearances (last in 1989)
2009 Results
West Noble Sectional: 5th place (106 points)
West Noble Regional: 6th place (149 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from West Noble Regional)
Ashton Sellers (10) – 20:18 (18th place)
Rachel Rinehart (10) – 20:45 (29th place)
Christie Tyler (12) – 21:00 (35th place)
Brittany Beard (10) – 21:02 (38th place)
Ericka Rinehart (10) – 21:51 (53rd place)
Sierra Conway (10) – 22:20 (61st place)
Kylie Marple (10) – 23:25 (71st place)
Outlook: The Hornets return a very young team that ran six freshmen on their varsity last season and were just one point away from qualifying for the semistate. That competition should once again be tight as the regional will boast seven of the preseason top 50. If sophomore Ericka Rinehart can run as well in the final two meets as she did in the sectional (where she went 19:41), the Hornets could be a formidable team in the northeast.
#36 Fort Wayne Concordia Cadets
New Haven Semistate #9
West Noble Regional #4
State finals history: Eight appearances (last in 2007), one podium finish (1983), one state championship (1983)
2009 Results
Fort Wayne Northrop Sectional: 2nd place (56 points)
West Noble Regional: 4th place (90 points)
New Haven Semistate: 8th place (192 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Haven Semistate)
Anna Reibs (11) – 20:19 (29th place)
Cayla Pusey (12) – 21:21 (61st place)
Sophie Stickell (?) – 21:38 (76th place)
Daniela Moeller (10) – 21:49 (85th place)
Sarah Doerffler (10) – 22:00 (95th place)
Outlook: The Cadets did not run their best race of the season at last year’s semistate, and it cost them a trip to the state finals. This season’s team looks to revenge that and brings back at least five of the girls that ran in the state tournament last year. Junior Anna Reibs is a potential individual qualifier as she ran 19:12 in the sectional and 19:20 in the regional, beating a handful of girls who did finish in the top 15 at the semistate.
#35 Floyd Central Highlanders
Brown County Semistate #6
State finals history: 18 appearances (last in 2002), seven podium finishes (last in 1992, one state runner-up (1987), four state championships (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992)
2009 Results
Jasper Sectional: 2nd place (64 points)
Crawford County Regional: 2nd place (85 points)
Brown County Semistate: 11th place (320 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Brown County Semistate)
Constance Rhodes (11) – 22:25 (48th place)
Chelsea Reidinger (12) – 22:54 (68th place)
Hannah Keenh (12) – 23:04 (81st place)
Brandy Fulton (12) – 23:17 (88th place)
Abbie Ewing (10) – 23:25 (96th place)
Ryan Meza (12) – 23:50 (103rd place)
Alyssa Moore (10) – 24:32 (121st place)
Outlook: The Highlanders return seven semistate runners and should look to be in contention for another state finals berth. In fact, Floyd Central was 11th at the semistate but ran without top runner Cathryn Peter, who will be a sophomore. With the strength of those returners, the ‘Landers should be among the top six at the semistate.
#34 Tri-County Cavaliers
New Prairie Semistate #7
State finals history: One appearance (2009)
2009 Results
Benton Central Sectional: 1st place (20 points)
Harrison (West Lafayette) Regional: 3rd place (58 points)
New Prairie Semistate: 6th place (186 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 20th place (423 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Prairie Semistate)
Rose Barbarich (11) – 20:22 (27th place)
Amara Sheldon (12) – 20:31 (33rd place)
Laura Furrer (11) – 21:12 (70th place)
Micaela Sheldon (10) – 21:21 (75th place)
Outlook: The Cavaliers have four of last year’s top five back from a team that beat the odds to qualify for the state finals. Tri-County has a distinct disadvantage in trying to replace runners, however, as the school’s enrollment figure last year was a scant 237, by far the smallest school present in Terre Haute on October 31. Still, the Cavs have a very good nucleus to work with so if they can find one more solid runner, a repeat trip to the state finals is certainly attainable.
#33 Indianapolis Cathedral Irish
Carmel Semistate #14
Brebeuf Regional #9
State finals history: Nine appearances (last in 2009), one podium finish (2004)
2009 Results
Brebeuf Sectional: 3rd place (76 points)
Brebeuf Regional: 4th place (121 points)
Carmel Semistate: 5th place (167 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 18th place (376 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Semistate)
Katie Quigley (11) – 19:44 (28th place)
Emma MacAnally (10) – 19:59 (34th place)
Meghan Searight (11) – 21:10 (89th place)
Maggie Johns (12) – 21:39 (103rd place)
Outlook: The Irish beat a host of very good teams last season to qualify for the state meet, which has become a Cathedral tradition. With only four of those seven back, and just two that ran in the top five in the tournament, the Irish should have a solid team but will be hard-pressed to repeat last year’s success. Perhaps geography will be the Irish’s best opponent as Cathedral is one of nine top 50 teams in the Brebeuf Regional.
#32 Hamilton Southeastern Royals
Carmel Semistate #13
Brebeuf Regional #8
Carmel Sectional #6
State finals history: Never qualified
2009 Results
Carmel Sectional: 5th place (117 points)
Brebeuf Regional: 6th place (145 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Brebeuf Regional)
Brooke Morgan (11) – 18:50 (4th place)
Katlyn Sloan (12) – 20:56 (48th place)
Emily Wagoner (10) – 21:05 (52nd place)
Carla Sraders (11) – 21:16 (58th place)
Emily Mastronicola (10) – 21:36 (61st place)
Outlook: The Royals reside in the most loaded area of Indiana, and last year’s results illustrate that. HSE just survived the sectional round and was a point away from advancing to the semistate. Had the Royals been at the meet, certainly they could have challenged for a top six position to qualify for the state finals. The challenges will be the same this season, though the Royals should feel good with Brooke Morgan up front and five back from last year.
#31 Homestead Spartans
New Haven Semistate #8
State finals history: 11 appearances (last in 2004)
2009 Results
Bellmont Sectional: 1st place (30 points)
Marion Regional: 3rd place (59 points)
New Haven Semistate: 11th place (247 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Haven Semistate)
Lauren Purlee (11) – 20:37 (41st place)
Marisa Magana (12) – 21:20 (60th place)
Mariah Jordan (10) – 21:37 (88th place)
Kayla Patterson (12) – 21:57 (91st place)
Haley Havert (11) – 22:08 (99th place)
Outlook: The Spartans were among the contenders for the last couple of spots to the state finals out of the northeast last season but didn’t run their best race at the semistate. With five of seven back, Homestead should get another chance this season. Though there is no true frontrunner, standard improvement across the board could send the Spartans on a team trip to the state finals, a journey they once made for ten years in a row.
#30 Chesterton Trojans
New Prairie Semistate #6
State finals history: 16 appearances (last in 2007), seven podium finishes (last in 2003), three state runners-up (1995, 1997, 2003)
2009 Results
Chesterton Sectional: 3rd place (78 points)
New Prairie Regional: 3rd place (95 points)
New Prairie Semistate: 10th place (239 points) *Top runner not in results due to forgotten chip
2010 Returners (based on results from Chesterton Sectional)
Melanie Buckmaster (10) – 19:38 (9th place)
Molly Stauffer (12) – 20:01 (15th place)
Kim St. Pierre (12) – 20:37 (21st place)
Katie Zelenika (12) – 20:54 (26th place)
Riley Trella (12) – 21:03 (27th place)
Outlook: One of the best traditions in the northwest, the Trojans have been to seven of the past ten state finals. It may very well have been eight, but one of Chesterton’s runners did not register in the final results after having run the race due to forgotten chips. Nevertheless, the Trojans bring back a senior-laden team to back up frontrunning sophomore Melanie Buckmaster that looks to be in a great position to atone for last year’s heartbreak.
#29 Lake Central Indians
New Prairie Semistate #5
State finals history: Seven appearances (last in 2009), two podium finishes (last in 2008), two runners-up (2007, 2008)
2009 Results
Hammond Gavit Sectional: 1st place (24 points)
Crown Point Regional: 1st place (39 points)
New Prairie Semistate: 2nd place (93 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 15th place (330 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Prairie Semistate)
Shelby Carroll (11) – 19:46 (15th place)
Anna Kacius (12) – 20:27 (30th place)
Jill Tharp (11) – 21:02 (57th place)
Amanda Onest (10) – 21:26 (76th place)
Outlook: Gone are Dana Payonk and Megan Plenus, the duo that led the Indians to consecutive state runner-up finishes. With a school the size of Lake Central (2009 enrollment: 3214), the Indians should rebuild rather than reload, even after losing a frontrunner like Payonk, who finished second at the state finals individually. Sophomore Alaina Willis, who ran in the sectional and regional for LC and contributed a leg to the state runner-up 4x8, could be a key contributor.
#28 Heritage Hills Patriots
Brown County Semistate #5
State finals history: Four appearances (last in 2009)
2009 Results
Jasper Sectional: 1st place (34 points)
Crawford County Regional: 1st place (43 points)
Brown County Semistate: 5th place (221 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 21st place (579 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Brown County Semistate)
Cecilia Oxford (12) – 20:57 (14th place)
Savannah Mundy (10) – 22:48 (64th place)
Kiersten Kennedy (11) – 22:57 (71st place)
Sophie Etienne (11) – 22:57 (72nd place)
Shaylyn Ayer (11) – 23:12 (86th place)
Outlook: The Patriots were one of the south’s best teams last season and look to be among them this year as well. Five of seven return, including senior Cecilia Oxford, who finished in the top 15 at the semistate. Heritage Hills appears likely, at this point at least, to again qualify for the state meet. If Sophie Etienne can return to the form that allowed her to finish 29th in the state finals as a freshman, it will only help the Pats.
#27 Penn Lady Kingsmen
New Haven Semistate #7
State finals history: 11 appearances (last in 2004), five podium finishes (last in 1995)
2009 Results
South Bend Riley Sectional: 1st place (41 points)
Elkhart Central Regional: 1st place (68 points)
New Haven Semistate: 7th place (170 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Haven Semistate)
Kristina Galat (11) – 20:01 (20th place)
Jen Priebe (10) – 20:37 (38th place)
Erika Ponce de Leon (?) – 21:23 (64th place)
Sophie Glassford (11) – 21:47 (81st place)
Courtney Lapehn (11) – 22:33 (112th place)
Outlook: The Kingsmen ran a shorthanded squad at the semistate, presumably to the illness that affected many teams around that time, and that cost them a potential trip to the state finals. Penn loses perennial frontrunner Val Burns but should still be a competitive team. The Kingsmen won the regional, beating a Northridge team that eventually finished 12th at the state meet.
#26 Bloomington North Cougars
Brown County Semistate #4
State finals history: 21 appearances (last in 2009), four podium finishes (last in 2007), one state runner-up (1982)
2009 Results
Brown County Sectional: 2nd place (69 points)
Brown County Regional: 3rd place (86 points)
Brown County Semistate: 3rd place (174 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 22nd place (581 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Brown County Semistate)
Christine Sparks (10) – 20:28 (5th place)
Laura O’Connor (10) – 22:16 (43rd place)
Sarah Worthman (12) – 22:44 (63rd place)
Laura Thomas (11) – 22:55 (69th place)
Holly Biggs (12) – 23:03 (80th place)
Outlook: The Cougars look to be in a similar position as one of the best teams in the south as North has made it to the past four state finals. BN has five runners back from last season’s squad, including frontrunner Christine Sparks who may develop into an All-Stater after being a middle school phenom. The Cougars will get a good barometer of their potential early, matching up frequently against potential podium teams Bloomington South and Columbus North.
#25 Evansville Memorial Tigers
Brown County Semistate #3
State finals history: One appearance (2009)
2009 Results
Evansville Mater Dei Sectional: 1st place (50 points)
Pike Central Regional: 1st place (50 points)
Brown County Semistate: 4th place (174 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 23rd place (586 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Brown County Semistate)
Maria Mehringer (10) – 20:51 (13th place)
Claire Ehrensbeck (11) – 21:57 (37th place)
Claire Bromm (12) – 22:05 (40th place)
Whitney Warren (12) – 22:41 (60th place)
Outlook: The Tigers return the top four from its first ever state finalist team. From what each team in its semistate brings back, Memorial looks likely to make a repeat trip to the state finals, given that the Tigers can find a fifth runner to close out scoring well. Claire Ehrsenbeck and Claire Bromm both had good track seasons and should look to close the gap on returning frontrunner Maria Mehringer.
#24 Fishers Tigers
Carmel Semistate #12
Brebeuf Regional #7
Carmel Sectional #5
State finals history: Never qualified
2009 Results
Carmel Sectional: 6th place (125 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Sectional)
Audrey Ramos (12) – 19:46 (16th place)
Erin Harnett (11) – 19:50 (18th place)
Emily Kuhn (12) – 19:52 (20th place)
Maddie Bartholomew (11) – 20:29 (34th place)
Ally Reyes (10) – 20:42 (37th place)
Sam Montgomery (12) – 21:13 (41st place)
Abbi Kuhn (10) – 21:43 (44th place)
Outlook: The Tigers were just shy of advancing from the state’s toughest sectional, one that included two eventual podium teams. All seven of last year’s “almost” team return so Fishers’ chances to go further in the tournament this season look good, but how deep can they go? The Tigers bring back a solid top three, but their ultimate success will be determined by how well the fourth and fifth runners can perform.
#23 Zionsville Eagles
Carmel Semistate #11
Brebeuf Regional #6
Carmel Sectional #4
State finals history: Never qualified
2009 Results
Carmel Sectional: 4th place (115 points)
Brebeuf Regional: 8th place (185 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Brebeuf Regional)
Courtney Sampson (10) – 20:09 (30th place)
Maria McGraw (12) – 20:16 (32nd place)
Suzie Hoops (10) – 20:29 (38th place)
Hayley Motter (12) – 20:34 (43rd place)
Jessica Banks (11) – 20:47 (47th place)
Lauren Munley (10) – 21:17 (59th place)
Sophie Stewart (11) – 21:23 (60th place)
Outlook: The Eagles have all of last year’s team back that appeared at times to be a potential state finalist but had a bit of a sub-par race at the stacked Brebeuf Regional. Nevertheless, each of those seven girls come back and Zionsville reportedly has a team upwards of sixty girls. The Eagles don’t have a frontrunner, which may hurt if the team wants to compete for a state finals berth, so their key will be the team’s depth.
#22 Northridge Raiders
New Haven Semistate #6
State finals history: 17 appearances (last in 2009), eight podium finishes (last in 2005), one state runner-up (2002)
2009 Results
Elkhart Central Sectional: 1st place (41 points)
Elkhart Central Regional: 2nd place (74 points)
New Haven Semistate: 3rd place (129 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 12th place (318 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Haven Semistate)
Skylair Hilton (12) – 19:16 (4th place)
Jennifer Shrock (10) – 20:40 (42nd place)
Madie Royce (10) – 20:50 (48th place)
Autumn Elliot (12) – 21:09 (57th place)
Corinne Cominator (10) – 21:38 (77th place)
Marissa Holaway (12) – 22:34 (113th place)
Outlook: Another of the state’s best traditions, the Raiders have been to ten consecutive state finals and 17 of the last 18. Once again, Northridge should be in the mix to take another trip to Terre Haute. Senior Skylar Hilton, who was All-State as a sophomore, will lead the Raiders. Behind her should be a good pack that could include some newcomers.
#21 West Lafayette Red Devils
New Prairie Semistate #4
State finals history: Seven appearances (last in 2008), two podium finishes (last in 2003)
2009 Results
Harrison (West Lafayette) Sectional: 2nd place (35 points)
Harrison (West Lafayette) Regional: 2nd place (57 points)
New Prairie Semistate: 9th place (236 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Prairie Semistate)
Kaisa Goodman (12) – 19:00 (4th place)
Taylor Jones (12) – 19:54 (17th place)
Bobbie Burgess (10) – 21:11 (68th place)
Kelly Swift (11) – 21:49 (88th place)
Elizabeth Westbrook (11) – 21:51 (89th place)
Grace Harvey (11) – 22:26 (106th place)
Cailey Daluga (10) – 23:09 (120th place)
Outlook: The Red Devils, who missed the state meet for the first time in five years, bring back a loaded squad that should help get them back to Terre Haute. Perennial frontrunner Kaisa Goodman will lead the team but should get help from Taylor Jones and Grace Harvey, both of whom broke 20 minutes in the sectional and regional. If West Side wants to contend with other semistate favorites Valparaiso, Portage and Crown Point, they will need to develop runners after their top three.
#20 DeKalb Barons
New Haven Semistate #5
West Noble Regional #3
State finals history: 14 appearances (last in 2009), one podium finish (2003)
2009 Results
West Noble Sectional: 2nd place (46 points)
West Noble Regional: 3rd place (85 points)
New Haven Semistate: 4th place (144 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 14th place (235 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Haven Semistate)
Samantha Anderson (12) – 20:03 (21st place)
Brenae Newhard (10) – 20:34 (36th place)
Carlena Magley (12) – 20:50 (49th place)
Lauren Beachy (11) – 21:26 (65th place)
Jolena Hansberger (11) – 21:32 (69th place)
Ashley Likens (11) – 21:52 (87th place)
Outlook: The Barons lose Autumn Beachy, a one-time semistate champion, but bring back the other six. DeKalb has been to nine of the last ten state finals, and preseason indications show that this year could be much of the same. Senior Samantha Anderson is a potential individual state finalist who ran better with each progressing round of the tournament. Between that frontrunning and good team depth, the Barons could be very competitive once again.
#19 Westfield Shamrocks
Carmel Semistate #10
Brebeuf Regional #4
Carmel Sectional #3
State finals history: Nine appearances (last in 2008), five podium finishes (last in 2008), one state runner-up (2004), four state championships (1998, 2005, 2006, 2007)
2009 Results
Carmel Sectional: 3rd place (87 points)
Brebeuf Regional: 3rd place (111 points)
Carmel Semistate: 7th place (205 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Semistate)
Adrienne Holland (11) – 20:10 (44th place)
Jessica Burton (12) – 20:15 (48th place)
Shannon Webb (10) – 20:49 (70th place)
Makenzie Simons (12) – 21:07 (87th place)
Lauren Schweizer (10) – 21:34 (100th place)
Outlook: The Shamrocks improved mightily over the course of last season and looked very likely to make the state finals for the sixth straight year. However, illness hit and Westfield fell two points shy. Still, the ‘Rocks have five back from last year’s squad, and Adrienne Holland and Shannon Webb had very good track campaigns. Although Westfield doesn’t have any frontrunners, they should have depth. That, combined with its good tradition, should be enough to challenge for a state finals trip.
#18 Portage Indians
New Prairie Semistate #3
State finals history: 13 appearances (last in 2009), two podium finishes (last in 1996), one state runner-up (1988)
2009 Results
Chesterton Sectional: 1st place (45 points)
New Prairie Regional: 2nd place (58 points)
New Prairie Semistate: 3rd place (141 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 17th place (358 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Prairie Semistate)
Terra Norman (11) – 19:41 (13th place)
Sierra King (11) – 20:11 (24th place)
Abby Trader (11) – 20:15 (26th place)
Rachel Foreman (12) – 20:37 (37th place)
Paige Mulle (11) – 21:11 (67th place)
Megan Ambler (10) – 21:28 (78th place)
Bri Cipich (11) – 21:32 (83rd place)
Outlook: The Indians return every athlete that ran for them in the semistate and state meet. As impressive as the Portage’s returners from the semistate look, the list does not include Christina Delturco, who was the Indians’ number two at the state finals and number one in the regional. Portage has been to the state finals the past two seasons with essentially the same squad, and most of them will have another year after this. Is this the season that the Indians make the jump?

2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Semistate)
Erica Carlson (12) – 19:27 (20th place)
Kollette Koehler (10) – 20:54 (78th place)
Ashley Jackson (10) – 20:54 (79th place)
Maddy Roach (10) – 21:07 (88th place)
Macey Roach (10) – 21:46 (110th place)
Allison Dunagin (11) – 22:22 (129th place)
Outlook: Like Pike, the Bears’ poor semistate performance is not a good indicator of the team’s good season. LC has a host of sophomores who could make the jump to being better runners. In fact, sophomore Maddy Roach will probably be the Bears’ top runner. She was the sectional champion last season and a state finalist in the 1600, running as fast as 5:06 during the season. Erica Carlson did not show up in track results so it will be interesting to see how that affects her fall season, if at all.
#16 Pike Red Devils
Carmel Semistate #8
State finals history: Four appearances (last in 1987), three podium finishes (last in 1987)
2009 Results
Ben Davis Sectional: 1st place (34 points)
Ben Davis Regional: 1st place (41 points)
Carmel Semistate: 9th place (253 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Semistate)
Lydia Greene (11) – 19:50 (29th place)
Sophia Greene (11) – 19:56 (33rd place)
Jasmine Hawkins (10) – 21:02 (83rd place)
Jaclyn Lahr (12) – 21:16 (91st place)
Abigaile Hall (12) – 22:10 (123rd place)
Outlook: The Red Devils ran perhaps their worst race of the season at the semistate meet, or else this might be a state finalist team with five runners returning. Instead, it should be a team with a chip on its shoulder looking to avenge last season’s disappointment. Pike is perhaps the state’s most up-and-coming program, going from relative obscurity to a team ranked in the top ten last year at points. The sisters Greene and Abby Hall, the latter of whom was the sectional champion, will be looking to lead Pike to its first state finals since 1987.
#15 Fort Wayne Carroll Chargers
New Haven Semistate #4
West Noble Regional #2
State finals history: Seven appearances (last in 2009), two podium finishes (last in 2009)
2009 Results
Fort Wayne Northrop Sectional: 1st place (27 points)
West Noble Regional: 1st place (51 points)
New Haven Semistate: 1st place (57 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 5th place (186 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Haven Semistate)
Brianna Johnson (12) – 19:12 (3rd place)
Hannah Quade (10) – 20:15 (26th place)
Olivia Hippensteel (10) – 20:25 (31st place)
Paige Patrick (10) – 21:16 (59th place)
Outlook: The Chargers lose two superstars in Kaylee McClanahan and Ciersten Deardorf, but bring back a handful of other very good runners. Senior Brianna Johnson is perhaps the individual favorite heading into the season after running the state’s best time over 3200 meters in the spring. Carroll has a history of bringing in talented freshman girls and developing them into long-term performers. Expect that to continue.
#14 Columbia City Eagles
New Haven Semistate #3
State finals history: Four appearances (last in 2009)
2009 Results
Marion Sectional: 2nd place (42 points)
Marion Regional: 2nd place (58 points)
New Haven Semistate: 6th place (172 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 16th place (351 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Brown County Semistate)
Renee Menzie (12) – 19:33 (10th place)
Laken Lefever (12) – 19:41 (15th place)
Mercedes Zello (11) – 20:47 (45th place)
Samantha Engle (12) – 21:32 (70th place)
Carlee Herald (10) – 21:38 (78th place)
Janie Vordran (11) – 22:10 (100th place)
Outlook: The Eagles qualified for their first state finals since 1986 and return their top six. The team should be improved from last season and a potentially top ten team at the state finals. Seniors Renee Menzie and Laken Lefever, both of whom finished in the top 15 at the semistate, will lead the Columbia City, and rumor is the Eagles have a very talented freshman.
#13 Center Grove Trojans
Carmel Semistate #7
State finals history: Six appearances (last in 2007), one podium finish (2006)
2009 Results
Edinburgh Sectional: 2nd place (42 points)
Greensburg Regional: 2nd place (60 points)
Carmel Semistate: 8th place (226 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Semistate)
Tori Schoettmer (10) – 18:57 (7th place)
Delainey Burnett (10) – 19:35 (25th place)
Morgan Lee (10) – 20:27 (53rd place)
Emma Raker (11) – 20:54 (80th place)
Outlook: The Trojans had a freshman-laden squad that very nearly made it to the state meet. Sophomore Tori Schoettmer, a returning cross country All-Stater, should lead CG. Schoettmer also had a very good spring campaign before injury struck. After her, five good runners return. Junior Sammie Bolen, who was not listed as a finisher in the semistate results, will be key for the Trojans. She was typically the team’s number three runner behind Schoettmer and Delainey Burnett, sister of a former CG All-Stater.
#12 North Central (Indianapolis) Panthers
Carmel Semistate #6
Brebeuf Regional #3
State finals history: 15 appearances (last in 2008), five podium finishes (last in 1994)
2009 Results
Carmel Sectional: 1st place (31 points)
Brebeuf Regional: 7th place (172 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Brebeuf Sectional)
Marissa Stephens (11) – 19:12 (2nd place)
Allison Rogers (11) – 19:35 (6th place)
Brenna Poulsen (11) – 19:36 (7th place)
Madison Long (10) – 19:51 (11th place)
Elizabeth Gamage (11) – 19:52 (12th place)
Outlook: The Panthers return five runners who broke 20 minutes in the sectional and could again be a very competitive team. Just two years ago, NC was second at the semistate. The frontrunning junior duo of Marissa Stephens and Brenna Poulsen, who finished sixth at the state track finals in the 3200, should give the Panthers a very good start. The depth is there as well for a deep run in the tournament, if the Panthers can survive each round on their path.
#11 Huntington North Vikings
New Haven Semistate #2
State finals history: Five appearances (last in 2009)
2009 Results
Marion Sectional: 1st place (24 points)
Marion Regional: 1st place (37 points)
New Haven Semistate: 5th place (158 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 10th place (257 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Haven Semistate)
Gretchen Spahr (12) – 19:55 (19th place)
Natalie Spahr (12) – 20:21 (28th place)
Robyn Karst (10) – 20:50 (47th place)
Kayla Patrick (10) – 20:59 (54th place)
Elaine Yahne (12) – 21:29 (66th place)
Becca Goodman (12) – 21:39 (79th place)
Outlook: The Vikings return six of seven from last year’s state finalist team, and seven that ran in the tournament. This edition of Huntington will feature a plethora of seniors, including Gretchen Spahr, who finished in the top 25 at the state finals as a junior. With the Sisters Spahr providing the frontrunning and good depth behind them, the Vikings should contend for the semistate title and another top ten finish.
#10 West Noble Chargers
New Haven Semistate #1
West Noble Regional #1
State finals history: Seven appearances (last in 2009), two podium finishes (last in 1999)
2009 Results
West Noble Sectional: 1st place (32 points)
West Noble Regional: 2nd place (63 points)
New Haven Semistate: 2nd place (122 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 11th place (270 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Haven Semistate)
Rachel Peterson (12) – 19:40 (14th place)
Allissa Peterson (12) – 20:08 (22nd place)
Valeria Guzman (10) – 20:31 (35th place)
Kaleigh Debeck (11) – 20:42 (44th place)
Kim Miller (11) – 20:50 (50th place)
Allison Musselman (12) – 20:58 (52nd place)
Outlook: The Chargers have their top six back from last year’s team that finished second in the semistate and 11th at the state finals. Off the strength of this senior group, especially the Sisters Peterson, WN has been to the past three state finals. This year’s squad looks to make it four consecutively, and certainly has the firepower to do so. The Chargers will get a challenge from many area teams but could very well be the top team in the northeast area.
#9 Crown Point Bulldogs
New Prairie Semistate #2
State finals history: 11 appearances (last in 2009), one podium finish (1997)
2009 Results
Crown Point Sectional: 1st place (18 points)
Crown Point Regional: 2nd place (40 points)
New Prairie Semistate: 1st place (76 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 6th place (206 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Prairie Semistate)
Laicee Pierce (12) – 18:48 (3rd place)
Lauren McCarroll (11) – 19:48 (15th place)
Augusta Shrader (12) – 20:03 (19th place)
Madison Koch (11) – 20:28 (32nd place)
Allison Wortel (10) – 20:50 (48th place)
Outlook: The Bulldogs have five of seven from last year’s sixth place team that was only 28 points away from finishing runner-up. Laicee Pierce, who was third at the state meet, will lead CP. After her, Lauren McCarroll (who was incorrectly marked as a senior in results) and Augusta Shrader are potentially top 15 finishers at the semistate. If the ‘Dogs can get fourth and fifth runners to close the gap a little, Crown Point could climb atop the podium this season.
#8 Franklin Central Flashes
Carmel Semistate #5
State finals history: Five appearances (last in 2009), two podium finishes (last in 2009)
2009 Results
New Palestine Sectional: 1st place (25 points)
Rushville Regional: 1st place (22 points)
Carmel Semistate: 4th place (98 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 3rd place (318 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Semistate)
Jasmine Al-Anzi (11) – 18:58 (6th place)
Carolyn Talhelm (10) – 19:29 (22nd place)
Nadia Al-Anzi (11) – 20:02 (39th place)
Meredith Jackson (11) – 20:10 (43rd place)
Alex Green (12) – 20:29 (55th place)
Outlook: The Flashes appeared as the team to beat midseason, faded late, then rebounded at the state meet to finish third for the second straight year. Much of that team comes back, and a well-coached FC team could once again be on the podium. Junior Jasmine Al-Anzi is a potential All-Stater, and sophomore Carolyn Talhelm ran very well until midseason. Meredith Jackson could be key after finishing seventh in the open 800 and anchoring the Flashes’ fourth place relay (which also returns all members).
#7 Bloomington South Panthers
Brown County Semistate #2
State finals history: 12 appearances (last in 2009)
2009 Results
Brown County Sectional: 1st place (22 points)
Brown County Regional: 2nd place (36 points)
Brown County Semistate: 2nd place (60 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 7th place (233 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Brown County Semistate)
Anna Voskuil (10) – 20:02 (3rd place)
Nicole Lucas (12) – 20:14 (4th place)
Allie Hetrick (11) – 20:35 (6th place)
Priyanka Ghosh (10) – 21:38 (26th place)
Karolina Kenney (11) – 21:42 (29th place)
Outlook: The Panthers have two studs at the front of their line-up and enough depth to be a force in the state. Sophomore Anna Voskuil and senior Nicole Lucas are potential individual medalists and each qualified for the state finals individually in track. The showdowns between the Panthers and Terre Haute North should be interesting. Through three runners, South could be competitive with just about any team in the state. It’s up to the Panthers to develop the depth in order to challenge for a podium spot or perhaps even more.
#6 Columbus North Bull Dogs
Carmel Semistate #4
State finals history: 25 appearances (last in 2009), 12 podium finishes (last in 2009), one state runner-up (1986), one state championship (2009)
2009 Results
Edinburgh Sectional: 1st place (20 points)
Greensburg Regional: 1st place (22 points)
Carmel Semistate: 3rd place (82 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 1st place (96 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Semistate)
Jessica Richardson (12) – 18:59 (9th place)
Rachael Sollman (10) – 19:34 (24th place)
Erin Shuffett (11) – 19:39 (26th place)
Allison Granna (12) – 20:32 (58th place)
Macey Thornburg (11) – 21:44 (107th place)
Outlook: Do you believe in miracles? Despite never being ranked higher than third, and finishing third in the semistate, the Bull Dogs pulled off one of history’s best upsets in upending Carmel at last year’s state finals. North returns five of the girls that ran that day and could again challenge for a podium spot. Senior Jess Richardson was ninth at the state meet, and sophomore Rachael Sollman was fourth at the state track finals in the 1600. Those two should give the Dogs a great 1-2 punch, perhaps two individual state medalists. Junior MacKenzie Harris, who didn’t run in the semistate due to illness but has improved mightily over the last 12 months, will be key for the champs after running 5:23 in the spring.
#5 Valparaiso Vikings
New Prairie Semistate #1
State finals history: 23 appearances (last in 2009), ten podium finishes (last in 2008), three state runners-up (2001, 2005, 2006), five state championships (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004)
2009 Results
Chesterton Sectional: 2nd place (45 points)
New Prairie Regional: 1st place (35 points)
New Prairie Semistate: 4th place (165 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 8th place (238 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from New Prairie Semistate)
Katelyn DeVries (11) – 18:44 (2nd place)
Patricia Joll (11) – 20:06 (20th place)
Lauren Bigger (11) – 21:02 (59th place)
Janelle Golly (12) – 21:34 (86th place)
Angelica Perez (12) – 22:28 (112th place)
Outlook: The Vikings improved mightily throughout the season, running a great race at the regional and topping that with a solid eighth place finish at the state finals. The team ran a tad short-handed at the semistate, without typical number two Tiffany Fortney, who will be a sophomore. With so much returning to one of Indiana’s top girls tradition, how will the top team of last decade begin this one? Coach’s daughter Katelyn DeVries finished fourth last year at the state meet individually and will enter as one of the top contenders early.
#4 Noblesville Millers
Carmel Semistate #3
Brebeuf Regional #2
Carmel Sectional #2
State finals history: Five appearances (last in 2009), two podium finishes (last in 2009)
2009 Results
Carmel Sectional: 1st place (28 points)
Brebeuf Regional: 2nd place (36 points)
Carmel Semistate: 2nd place (79 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 4th place (186 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Semistate)
Kendra Foley (10) – 18:49 (5th place)
Helen Willman (11) – 19:04 (12th place)
Rachel Kacer (10) – 19:05 (13th place)
Renee Studt (10) – 20:10 (45th place)
Outlook: The Millers bring back four very good runners with three returning individual state qualifiers. Heading into the semistate, the Millers looked to be one of the two main contenders for the state title. It didn’t happen that season, but this could very well be Noblesville’s year if the team can find a fifth runner, which should not be difficult in a school of over 2000 students in Hamilton County. That fifth girl could be Hannah Pimley, who ran 5:27 for 1600 meters in the spring or Michelle Hance, who ran a leg on the team’s third place 4x800 relay.
#3 Terre Haute North Patriots
Brown County Semistate #1
State finals history: Ten appearances (last in 2009)
2009 Results
Jasper Sectional: 1st place (17 points)
Brown County Regional: 1st place (28 points)
Brown County Semistate: 1st place (37 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 9th place (251 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Brown County Semistate)
TaPring Goatee (10) – 19:25 (1st place)
Chanli Mundy (10) – 19:56 (2nd place)
Annie Mullican (10) – 20:36 (7th place)
Kiowa Burris (10) – 21:04 (17th place)
Andrea Clark (11) – 21:08 (18th place)
Outlook: The Patriots were great at the semistate, and have five returners that finished in the top 20 at the state meet. North very well could be a state title challenger. Sophomore TaPring Goatee is the defending state champion, and fellow classmate Chanli Mundy could be top ten in Terre Haute. Certainly, the Pats have more than just those two. In fact, junior Emily Cotterman had an injury and was not able to compete after mid-September. With her in the mix, the Pats could very well challenge Carmel.
#2 Brownsburg Bulldogs
Carmel Semistate #2
State finals history: One appearance (2009)
2009 Results
South Putnam Sectional: 1st place (58 points)
Ben Davis Regional: 2nd place (83 points)
Carmel Semistate: 6th place (203 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 13th place (323 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Semistate)
Madelyn Webster (12) – 18:58 (8th place)
Sydney Lesko (11) – 19:01 (11th place)
Veronica Goduto (11) – 19:17 (16th place)
Kyra Jo Gaerke (10) – 21:13 (90th place)
Rachel Smith (11) – 21:44 (108th place)
Samantha Rush (11) – 23:15 (138th place)
Outlook: The Bulldogs are being ranked so high not only for who they return but also who they add. Brownsburg has three frontrunners back, all of whom finished in the top 20 at the state’s toughest semistate. The ‘Dogs also add Laura Bess, whose family moved into the area. Bess was sixth at the cross country state finals last year while running for Harrison in West Lafayette. These four should give Brownsburg a team that is very hard to beat, but cross country takes five. Who fills in that spot for the ‘Dogs will be key. The best candidate could be sophomore Kyra Jo Gaerke, who cleaned up well for Brownsburg last year as a fourth/fifth runner most of the season but appears to be much improved after running 5:23 in the track season.
#1 Carmel Greyhounds
Carmel Semistate #1
Brebeuf Regional #1
Carmel Sectional #1
State finals history: 29 appearances (last in 2009), 25 podium finishes (last in 2009), eight runner-up finishes (1981, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2009), 11 state championships (1982, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2008)
2009 Results
Carmel Sectional: 2nd place (32 points)
Brebeuf Regional: 1st place (36 points)
Carmel Semistate: 1st place (58 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 2nd place (186 points)
2010 Returners (based on results from Carmel Semistate)
Sarah Bennett (11) – 18:42 (1st place)
Renee Wellman (11) – 18:47 (3rd place)
Allison Jacobsen (11) – 19:23 (19th place)
Alex Chitwood (12) – 19:28 (21st place)
Lauren Kahre (11) – 19:32 (23rd place)
Outlook: No surprise here as the perennially great Greyhounds enter the season as the team to beat. Last year, Carmel was tops in Indiana for most of the season, despite looking second-best to Franklin Central at one point and losing a close contest to Noblesville in the sectional. The ‘Hounds faded down the stretch in the state finals, ultimately finishing second to a rapidly-charging Columbus North team that took over in the last 1000 meters. Still, the top five from that team are back. Carmel should be the team to beat if it can hold things together down the stretch. The Greyhounds’ roster has four girls who have finished All-State at some point in their careers. Certainly with the strength of teams at Brownsburg, Terre Haute North and Noblesville, this year’s squad is not invincible, but there is no doubt entering the fall that Carmel is once again Indiana’s best.
