Goals can play a major role in the successes of your season. With a sport like ours, it is strange to determine what a "good" race is. Breaking 18 minutes for one guy, may have the same satisfying effect as it does for somebody else to claim the last All-Semi State place. Goals are what help you motivate yourself each and every day to better yourself, not only in running but as a person.
Below, Coach Welch shares some of his insight with the community on goals. Read through it, you may not enjoy most of it but you may find a single quote that can help motivate and remind you why you are sweating while others are sleeping these last days of summer. They may help you get through that early night bed time on Friday night while the other kids are out screaming at the football game eating their salty, buttery popcorn. We hope that this finds a way to help you, help yourself as you begin your season.

Goals

Think: What are goals?
Goals are the targets of success.
Who you see is who you’ll be.
What you set is what you get.
You must have a “Far” vision…the “Dream.”
You must have a near look…The present “Goal.”
A DREAM is what you would like for life to be.
A “GOAL” is what you intend to make happen.
If one wants to know the secret of being great…the answer is…
One must possess the “Far” vision and the “Near” look.
A Scientist sees what it is; an Engineer sees what it can be. An athlete must be like an engineer and have a vision of what he or she can be down the road.
You must first determine where you want to go.
When this is decided you then must be sure each step you take is a “Step” in the direction you want to go. Make sure it’s a step that leads in the right direction. Not what Yogi Berra says: “When you come to fork in the road, take it.”
Like most all games you need a way to keep on your route to reaching Your “Objective.”
How can you experience the thrill of hitting a bull’s eye if there is no target.
In Running you must have a target to shoot at every day of practice and every competition or you will never know if you succeed or not.
An archer or a hunter who shoots at a target that is fuzzy will have a difficult time hitting it. With a good clear target, he or she has a better chance of “Blasting” it.
Have a clear and specific picture of the result you want to reach.
View problems as opportunities. Find ways to go over, under, around or go through your roadblock.
Be able to see or visualize in advance what a successful “Goal” looks like. How does it feel to you to reach that ‘Goal”…in advance…before ever attempting it?
Your “Attitude” is either the lock on or the key to your success.
It’s not what you are that holds you back, it’s what you think you are.
There are three important words you can say to yourself and you should never forget them. “YES I CAN”
Belief is the ignition switch that gets your rocket off the launching pad.
What is Success?
You can’t Drive it.
You can’t Wear it.
YOU CAN’T LIVE IN IT.
YOU CAN’T DRINK IT.
YOU CAN’T SMOKE IT.
YOU CAN’T SNORT IT.
YOU CAN’T TRAVEL TO IT.
YOU WILL FIND IT INSIDE YOURSELF.
SUCCESS REALLY IS A CHOICE…AND YOU REALLY DO MAKE THE CHOICE...
