The Chargers ascended the podium twice in the decade, both times coming up just short of a runner-up finish In a growing school district, the Chargers have asserted themselves among the best in the state more and more over the decade. After having some semistate woes in the late 90s and beginning of this decade, Carroll has now been to six straight state finals. Two of those trips included podium appearances, with both of those squads being very, very close to a runner-up finish. The Chargers have also had some memorable battles with northeastern rival Northridge at the semistate level, including a young underdog squad upending the favored Raiders in 2004. Carroll is not well-known for its plethora of frontrunners, but Chelsea Blanchard, Brianna Johnson and Amy Kempf have all finished in the top ten. Johnson, who still has one season of cross country left next year, has been perhaps the Chargers’ signature runner. Despite battling some setbacks in previous falls, Johnson has finished fifth, tenth, and eleventh in three state finals. In total, the Chargers have had five All-Staters in the decade. With a good group returning from the 2009 podium team, a well-established tradition now and solid feeder programs, the Chargers loom to be very competitive for the foreseeable future. Could the next decade bring Carroll its first state championship? | |
