Brown County Semi-State Preview

By David Schulz

The Course

The Brown County Course has had a few adjustments from last year’s competition. The first turn that used to make the pack funnel between a tree and thorny foliage was adjusted to resolve this scrunched up mess. Also, the narrow winding trails by the mile marker have been widened to allow for navigation around the inevitable mud puddles. These changes should allow for quicker times. However, after a little rain fall and the boy’s race preceding the girls, this race could turn out to be a muddy mess.

Here is a breakdown of the teams and top individuals in the Brown County Semi-State.

The Favorites

Bloomington South

After being ranked top ten almost all year, the Panthers are looking to hold on to their semi-state championship title. With a pack of four under 20 minutes at the Brown County sectional they were able to claim a solid victory over Bloomington North. However, a loss to Terre Haute North at regional shows that if this team doesn’t have everyone doing what they need to do they might not come away with the win. Regardless of the outcome, this team is stacked.

Terre Haute North

With an awesome 1-2 punch and a close pack, the 15th ranked Patriots have one thing in mind: a semi-state championship title. Terre Haute North’s win over Bloomington South at the regional sends a message that they mean business. Lead by freshman Tapering Goatee the patriots have a good chance of claiming victory. If their 3-4-5 have a good race this team will be tough to beat.

The Contenders

Bloomington North

Realistically, Bloomington North doesn’t have a reasonable chance of taking down the favorites. However, they can almost guarantee themselves a trip to the big show. With Christine Sparks up in front and a 2-5 pack separated by only 30 seconds, the Cougars should have no problem advancing.

Evansville Memorial

With a win at the Pike Central regional, Memorial is ready to run a great race at Brown County. With Maria Mehringer in the front of a decent 1-2-3, this team should be able to beat out most of the competition and earn a trip to the state finals.

Looking to advance

Heritage Hills

Coming off a strong victory at the Crawford County regional, Heritage Hills has a legitimate shot of a top six finish at semi-state. This team‘s 2-5 girls finish within 15 seconds of each other at the regional. Take that and add in a low score from leader Cecilia Oxford and they’ve got a great shot at advancing.

Bedford North Lawrence

The Stars had a great race to win the Bedford regional. They may not have a great front runner, but they have a deadly pack that swallows up any unsuspecting stragglers. They race well as a team and should be able to earn themselves a trip to Terre Haute.

Evansville North

After a second place finish at the Pike Central regional, Evansville North will have to have a good race if they want to make it to State. Leader Lacey Orth should be able to score low points and with the rest of the team running good they have a shot of making it.

Looking for a miracle

Perry Central

This team has had surprising success this season; however, Perry Central will certainly need a good race if they want to advance. Every runner will need to move up significantly if they want to advance. Don’t count them out.

Looking for top 10

Madison

After a 2nd place finish at the Bedford regional, the Cubs will be looking for a high position at semi-state.

Salem

Salem placed 3rd at the Bedford regional and has an opportunity to place top ten at Brown County.

Edgewood

This team raced well at the Brown County regional to place 4th. They have enough experience and talent to grab a top ten finish at semi-state.

Northeast Dubois

Lead by Katie Sands, Dubois finished 3rd at the Crawford County regional. This team has a decent 1-2, but if they want a top ten finish at semi-state they will need to race better than usual.

Happy to be here

Terre Haute South

Terre Haute South Finished 5th at the Brown County regional after placing 2nd at their sectional to Terre Haute North. This team might surprise.

Floyd Central

With a 4th place finish coming out of the Crawford County regional, Floyd Central will be able to show what they can do at semi-state.

South Knox

Lead by Emily Brown, South Knox placed 3rd at the Pike Central regional.

Silver Creek

Silver Creek showed strength and placed 3rd at the Bedford regional after a 3rd place finish at their sectional.

Evansville Central

With strong front runner Taylor Wiley winning the race, Evansville Central Placed 5th at the Pike Central regional.

Evansville Harrison

Harrison Placed 4th at Pike Central.

Brownstown

The Braves won a tie breaker against Jeffersonville to place 5th at Bedford.

New Albany

With Phoebe Bauer up front, New Albany rounded off the Crawford County regional with a 5th place finish.

INDIVIDUALS

The Favorite

Tapring Goatee, Terre Haute North

After an amazing race at the state preview Tapring showed that she was a legit freshman. She had a small falling out but now she is back and ready to claim her first semi-state title. With a victory at the Brown County regional, Goatee will be ready to earn a Blue Place ribbon at semi-state as well as a high finish at The State Finals.

The Contenders

Chanli Mundy, Terre Haute North

Having led this team for a good portion of the year, Freshman Chanli Mundy has gained plenty of experience and has shown strong talent. Mundy will have a solid race.

Anna Voskuil, Bloomington South

The freshman from Bloomington South has been ranked number 1 in the south for a good amount of the year. After a 3rd place finish at the Brown County regional, Anna Voskuil will be looking for revenge. She has a good shot at the title.

Nicole Lucas, Bloomington South

This junior has shown good consistency through the years and has gained plenty of experience racing with the panthers. She has been ranked top five in the south all year. Nicole Lucas is capable of winning at Brown County.

Erika Wilson, Eastern Pekin

With a big win at the Bedford regional, Erika Wilson will be looking to have a huge race at Brown County. Wilson has the talent to bust out a good finish at semi-state.

The Darkhorses

Hope Lockman

After a good showing at the Bedford regional, Hope Lockman will be looking to top her 12th place finish from last year’s semi-state. Don’t be surprised if she has a bust out race.

Taylor Royalty, Trinity Lutheran

After hanging on to Erika Wilson for a majority of the race at the Bedford regional, freshman Taylor Royalty collapsed in front of the finish line, barely crawling her way to a 14th place finish. This time around Taylor will be prepared to run a smart fast race.
