#25 – Warren Central Warriors – Carmel Semi-State #13
2009 Results:
New Palestine Sectional: 1st place (25 points)
Rushville Regional: 1st place (32 points)
Carmel Semi-State: 10th place (251 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Carmel Semi-State)
Cody Stone (11) – 16:36 (31st place)
Sean O’Brien (12) – 16:46 (41st place)
Brandon Smith (11) – 17:28 (84th place)
2010 Outlook:
Warren Central rolled through the first two rounds of the tournament last season before falling short at the Carmel Semi-State. On paper, 2010 appears to be another third round exit for the Warriors. They do return three athletes from that squad led by Cody Stone. Warren should have little trouble getting through to the semi-state, but they are going to have to fill some holes if they are to challenge for a state meet berth. Don’t count them out as they always are a deep team and have a large talent pool to choose from.
#24 – Northridge Raiders – New Haven Semi-State #4
2009 Results:
Elkhart Central Sectional: 3rd place (86 points)
Elkhart Central Regional: 3rd place (88 points)
New Haven Semi-State: 9th place (257 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the New Haven Semi-State)
Trevor Moore (12) – 16:37 (10th place)
Cody Welty (11) – 17:13 (37th place)
Tyler Beachy (11) – 17:56 (87th place)
Mitchell Eby (12) – 17:58 (91st place)
Marshall Hawn (12) – 17:59 (92nd place)
2010 Outlook:
Northridge missed the state finals in 2009 which has been a rarity for the program over the past decade. The Raiders appear to be in condition to re-emerge as a state finals contender this fall as they return five athletes from last year’s ninth place semi-state finishing squad. They have great front running talent in Moore, a solid second in Welty, and a nice pack following them. They cannot let that pack get buried however as they must close the gap if the Raiders are to make a state meet run in 2010.
#23 – Center Grove Trojans – Carmel Semi-State #12
2009 Results:
Edinburgh Sectional: 2nd place (59 points)
Greensburg Regional: 2nd place (67 points)
Carmel Semi-State: 8th place (225 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Carmel Semi-State)
Jacob Martin (12) – 16:50 (42nd place)
Austin Mudd (12) – 16:54 (47th place)
Joey Phillips (11) – 17:06 (52nd place)
Ryan Meyer (12) – 17:26 (81st place)
Parker Settle (11) – 18:17 (129th place)
2010 Outlook:
The Trojans surprised some by finishing eighth at last fall’s Carmel Semi-State. Center Grove returns five athletes from that team but the story does not end there. Perhaps the most intriguing story line from this past spring was the emergence of Austin Mudd. If Mudd can carry over his 800 meter success to cross country, watch out. The Trojans need to find a fifth and final scorer however as a fifth man over 18 minutes will destroy your team hopes in this area of the state.
#22 – Bloomington South Panthers – Brown County Semi-State #4
2009 Results:
Brown County Sectional: 1st place (36 points)
Brown County Regional: 2nd place (36 points)
Brown County Semi-State: 3rd place (124 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 20th place (442 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Brown County Semi-State)
Carl Smith (11) – 17:22 (19th place)
Jordan Gornall (12) – 17:35 (30th place)
Mark Chandler (11) – 17:58 (49th place)
Kaleb Rich-Harris (11) – 18:06 (59th place)
Michael Staton (11) – 18:27 (82nd place)
2010 Outlook:
A perennial southern Indiana powerhouse, Bloomington South looks to rebound from a disappointing 20th place finish in last season’s state finals. They have the firepower to get that opportunity as they are proven up front with Smith and Gornall. They also have some nice complimentary pieces and should have little trouble advancing through the Brown County Semi-State. They could be helped by adding some depth beyond their top five, which they usually do with little trouble.
#21 – Westfield Shamrocks – Carmel Semi-State #11
2009 Results:
Carmel Sectional: 5th place (105 points)
Brebeuf Jesuit Regional: 7th place (151 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Brebeuf Jesuit Regional)
Connor Martin (12) – 15:44 (3rd place)
Cole Tribbett (12) – 16:47 (33rd place)
Kyle Duvall (10) – 16:52 (37th place)
Alexander Schmidt (12) – 17:40 (62nd place)
Samuel Sobczak (11) – 18:07 (70th place)
2010 Outlook:
The Shamrocks return five athletes from last year’s seventh place team at Brebeuf Jesuit. They have one of Indiana’s elite runners in Connor Martin as well as one of Indiana’s young talents in Duvall. They narrowly escaped the brutal Carmel Sectional last season and should be looking beyond the first two rounds of the tournament series this time around. If they can get some fresh legs to chase Duvall, the Shamrocks could make a run towards the semi-state. If not, expect a mirror image of their 2009 finish.
#20 – Perry Central Commodores – Brown County Semi-State #3
2009 Results:
Jasper Sectional: 1st place (41 points)
Crawford County Regional: 2nd place (67 points)
Brown County Semi-State: 4th place (136 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 22nd place (480 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Brown County Semi-State)
Eric Scheiber (12) – 17:11 (13th place)
Ian Bashor (12) – 17:36 (33rd place)
Neal Schwartz (12) – 17:49 (41st place)
Noah Gatwood (12) – 18:01 (52nd place)
Alex Newton (10) – 18:03 (55th place)
2010 Outlook:
This just isn’t supposed to happen. Perry Central will be looking to make yet another state meet experience despite their small school enrollment. The Commodores are looking to make some noise in 2010 and have the guns to do so. They return five athletes from last year’s state qualifying squad and will be looking to improve upon their 22nd place finish at the state finals. If their 2-5 guys can close the gap on Scheiber, they become even more dangerous. Top 15 at the state meet would be a tremendous accomplishment for this team.
#19 – Fort Wayne Snider Panthers – New Haven Semi-State #3
2009 Results:
Fort Wayne Northrop Sectional: 2nd place (52 points)
West Noble Regional: 2nd place (83 points)
New Haven Semi-State: 5th place (178 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 18th place (390 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the New Haven Semi-State)
Mitchell Dutton (11) – 17:08 (33rd place)
Blake Jones (11) – 17:15 (40th place)
Bisrat Desta (12) – 17:29 (53rd place)
Peter Haydock (12) – 17:59 (94th place)
2010 Outlook:
Perhaps no school helped themselves this past track season more than the Snider Panthers. This program is riding a wave of momentum following last season’s state berth as well as state runner-up 4x800 meter relay performance. On paper, it does not appear that the Panthers are deserving of a top 20 ranking, but don’t be fooled. Snider is quietly one of the deepest teams in the state of Indiana and will only improve as the 2010 season gets going. Don’t sleep on this team as they will be strong.
#18 – Lawrence North Wildcats – Carmel Semi-State #10
2009 Results:
Brebeuf Jesuit Sectional: 2nd place (59 points)
Brebeuf Jesuit Regional: 6th place (144 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Brebeuf Jesuit Regional)
Joshua Roche (12) – 16:14 (13th place)
Scott Stanley (12) – 16:22 (20th place)
Tyler Courtney (11) – 17:10 (52nd place)
Alexander Sparks (10) – 17:36 (59th place)
2010 Outlook:
Lawrence North was a near miss at the competitive Brebeuf Jesuit Regional last season. They appear to be in a similar position entering this fall, but the fine line is very close. Roche helped himself with a great season on the track and this team is known for its depth. The Wildcats need to improve man by man and then find a couple of additional parts in order to toe the line at the Carmel Semi-State and possibly the state finals.
#17 – Fishers Tigers – Carmel Semi-State #9
2009 Results:
Carmel Sectional: 6th place (109 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Carmel Sectional)
Rocky Pollock (12) – 16:16 (14th place)
Ryan Butler (12) – 16:44 (28th place)
Conrad Ling (12) – 17:09 (38th place)
Jason Sipher (12) – 17:33 (42nd place)
2010 Outlook:
Fishers was another one of those very talented teams that finished its season way too early last year. The Tigers will be looking to avenge their sixth place finish in the Carmel Sectional as they return four athletes from that team. Although nothing is guaranteed, Fishers has the talent to do so. The return of Josh Millares who was sick at the end of last season gives Fishers a solid five. Expect the Tigers to be on pins and needles for a couple of weeks in October as the sectional and regional will make or break their season.
#16 – Valparaiso Vikings – New Prairie Semi-State #4
2009 Results:
Chesterton Sectional: 3rd place (75 points)
New Prairie Regional: 3rd place (97 points)
New Prairie Semi-State: 6th place (182 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 19th place (407 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the New Prairie Semi-State)
Taylor Bisacchi (10) – 17:05 (33rd place)
Michael Bobos (12) – 17:15 (43rd place)
Ahmad Aljobeh (11) – 17:35 (69th place)
Jay Doane (12) – 17:45 (81st place)
Murray Banks (11) – 18:13 (108th place)
2010 Outlook:
Valparaiso is looking to make yet another appearance in 2010. The Vikings have the talent to do so behind five returnees from last year’s 19th place state finals squad. Valparaiso lacks a dominant force up front, but has always made its living with a nice tight pack. 2010 appears to be no exception as the green clad harriers have talent up and down the roster. They are also usually one of the deeper teams in the state of Indiana, so finding a couple more solid contributors should not be much of a problem.
#15 – North Harrison Cougars – Brown County Semi-State #2
2009 Results:
Crawford County Sectional: 1st place (23 points)
Crawford County Regional: 1st place (39 points)
Brown County Semi-State: 2nd place (56 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 5th place (212 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Brown County Semi-State)
Ryan Foster (11) – 16:55 (6th place)
Jonathan Reynolds (10) – 16:58 (7th place)
Johnnie Guy (11) – 17:01 (9th place)
Josh Guy (11) – 17:56 (47th place)
Cody Morgan (11) – 19:06 (123rd place)
2010 Outlook:
North Harrison was a great story in 2009. The Cougars overcame all of the doubters and reached the podium in Terre Haute. Get used to it because they are here to stay. While expected to drop off a bit following the graduation of national caliber runner Tyler Byrne, the Cougars will still be a force to be reckoned with. One factor that hurt North Harrison last season was depth and in 2010 that will be the storyline once again. The Cougars are set at positions 1-4 and must find a final puzzle piece to repeat last year’s success.
#14 – Zionsville Eagles – Carmel Semi-State #8
2009 Results:
Carmel Sectional: 3rd place (80 points)
Brebeuf Jesuit Regional: 5th place (122 points)
Carmel Semi-State: 5th place (145 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 7th place (251 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Carmel Semi-State)
Samuel Berger (11) – 16:24 (23rd place)
Graham Bixler (11) – 16:30 (27th place)
Ian Boggs (12) – 17:14 (63rd place)
2010 Outlook:
At first glance, Zionsville should expect a drop off and be in rebuilding mode in 2010. After all, the Eagles lose four of their top seven from last year’s 7th place state meet squad. However, Zionsville was a very deep and talented squad in 2009 and those athletes who did not run at the varsity level in the tournament series will step in to the spotlight this fall. It will not be easy however as many other teams in central Indiana have their eyes on a state meet berth. Zionsville peaks well and will once again be in the conversation of the state’s top teams.
#13 – Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger Saints – New Haven Semi-State #2
2009 Results:
Fort Wayne Northrop Sectional: 1st place (45 points)
West Noble Regional: 1st place (53 points)
New Haven Semi-State: 3rd place (128 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 12th place (307 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the New Haven Semi-State)
Phil Schroeder (12) – 17:03 (27th place)
Luke Miller (10) – 17:24 (48th place)
Sam Gray (12) – 17:29 (54th place)
Andrew Eckrich (11) – 17:55 (86th place)
2010 Outlook:
Bishop Dwenger looks to be among the top teams in northeast Indiana entering 2010. The Saints return four athletes that snuck in to the top half of the state meet last season. The Saints have a great 1-4 group that is usually separated by mere seconds. Eckrich had a poor showing at the semi-state, but returned to the front at the state finals and should lead this team in 2010. Add in the fact that the Saints had a solid junior varsity crew last year and there is no reason to believe that this team cannot challenge for the podium this fall.
#12 – West Lafayette Red Devils – New Prairie Semi-State #3
2009 Results:
Harrison (West Lafayette) Sectional: 1st place (28 points)
Harrison (West Lafayette) Regional: 1st place (31 points)
New Prairie Semi-State): 3rd place (137 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 21st place (475 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the New Prairie Semi-State)
Zane Cooperider (12) – 16:32 (9th place)
Andrew Cartwright (11) – 16:58 (26th place)
John Ribeiro (12) – 17:17 (44th place)
Chase Lewark (11) – 17:31 (63rd place)
2010 Outlook:
West Lafayette underachieved at the state finals last season after a great first three rounds of the tournament. Returning from that squad are four solid harriers that are ready to redeem themselves. The Red Devils have what it takes as they boast a quartet of reliable and consistent performers that will be ready when the gun fires. As many other teams are, West Lafayette is in need of a fifth and final scorer plus a couple of extra legs to seal the deal. A top 10 state meet finish is within reach for this team.
#11 – South Bend St. Joseph’s Indians – New Haven Semi-State #1
2009 Results:
South Bend Riley Sectional: 1st place (28 points)
Elkhart Central Regional: 2nd place (77 points)
New Haven Semi-State: 4th place (131 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 16th place (360 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the New Haven Semi-State)
Joey Zielinski (11) – 17:02 (25th place)
Conner Method (11) – 17:15 (39th place)
Joshua O’Brien (11) – 17:20 (45th place)
David Bontrager (12) – 17:25 (50th place)
Jordan Holloman (11) – 18:04 (99th place)
2010 Outlook:
The Indians appear to be the class of the field in the New Haven Semi-State. They return five athletes from last year’s 16th place state finals squad. St. Joe’s has a nice tight group up front and a solid nucleus beyond that. If they are to challenge for the podium, depth is a necessity which should not be much of a problem as the Indians were a fairly deep squad last fall.
#10 – Lawrence Central Bears – Carmel Semi-State #7
2009 Results:
Brebeuf Jesuit Sectional: 3rd place (70 points)
Brebeuf Jesuit Regional: 9th place (181 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Brebeuf Jesuit Regional)
Connor Claflin (12) – 16:24 (21st place)
Ross Pereira (11) – 16:28 (24th place)
Matt Dorsey (10) – 16:56 (41st place)
Cole Hester (10) – 17:08 (51st place)
Sean Gassen (11) – 17:11 (53rd place)
2010 Outlook:
Lawrence Central is another team that is riding the wave of a great track season. The Bears tasted a lot of success on the oval with their distance squad and are hoping that translates in to cross country success. It should because the Bears return five athletes that competed in the Brebeuf Jesuit Regional last season. They have a lot of confidence now and will only get better as Lawrence Township usually boasts some of the best middle school programs anywhere. A state berth is definitely within the claws of the Bears.
#9 – LaPorte Slicers – New Prairie Semi-State #2
2009 Results:
Chesterton Sectional: 2nd place (57 points)
New Prairie Regional: 2nd place (80 points)
New Prairie Semi-State: 2nd place (123 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 11th place (305 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the New Prairie Semi-State)
Mitchell Hubner (11) – 16:29 (7th place)
Austin Alcorn (11) – 16:54 (23rd place)
Nicholas Wilczewski (11) – 17:03 (31st place)
Joshua Hojnacki (12) – 17:12 (39th place)
Stuart West (12) – 17:24 (53rd place)
Morgan Dearing (12) – 17:41 (77th place)
2010 Outlook:
LaPorte will be a force to be reckoned with this fall. The Slicers return six athletes from last season’s 11th place state finals squad. Hubner will remain the main cog in LaPorte’s attack and has a lot of talent around him which will only make the team better. On paper, this looks like a team that can challenge for the podium and do some major damage at the state finals. Expect to hear a lot about LaPorte and their status as one of Indiana’s elite teams this fall.
#8 – Chesterton Trojans – New Prairie Semi-State #1
2009 Results:
Chesterton Sectional: 1st place (18 points)
New Prairie Regional: 1st place (25 points)
New Prairie Semi-State: 1st place (40 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 2nd place (131 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the New Prairie Semi-State)
Manny Orlich (12) – 17:11 (38th place)
2010 Outlook:
Chesterton enters the 2010 cross country season looking to move up the standings by one position. After a surprising runner-up finish in 2009, the Trojans return two athletes who led them to the championship at the New Prairie Semi-State. Two athletes (Ryan Cutter: 16:12 at the regional and Andrew Morris: 16:20 at the sectional) aided in Chesterton’s attack at the state finals. There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding this team and if it is true, they need to add a couple pieces to have a podium shot.
#7 – Hamilton Southeastern Royals – Carmel Semi-State #6
2009 Results:
Carmel Sectional: 4th place (95 points)
Brebeuf Jesuit Regional: 4th place (114 points)
Carmel Semi-State: 6th place (152 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 8th place (253 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Carmel Semi-State)
Sawyer Hitchcock (11) – 16:39 (33rd place)
Troy Reeder (10) – 16:40 (35th place)
Kyle Knight (11) – 16:53 (45th place)
Jack Andritsch (11) – 17:14 (62nd place)
Will Wartenberg (12) – 17:26 (79th place)
Michael Burkett (11) – 17:57 (114th place)
2010 Outlook:
Hamilton Southeastern played with fire throughout the tournament series last season. They narrowly escaped week after week what is the state tournament’s toughest route. The rewards followed as the Royals finished 8that the state finals. Returning from that experience are six athletes poised to repeat that success, and then some. Southeastern has as much talent as anyone, and will look to showcase that talent in to a podium finish and possibly more this fall.
#6 – Franklin Central Flashes – Carmel Semi-State #5
2009 Results:
New Palestine Sectional: 2nd place (38 points)
Rushville Regional: 2nd place (48 points)
Carmel Semi-State: 7th place (198 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Carmel Semi-State)
Jason Crist (11) – 15:41 (4th place)
Matt Shaw (11) – 16:38 (32nd place)
Andrice Martin (10) – 17:12 (60th place)
Andrew Webb (10) – 17:17 (68th place)
Nick Dwadwal (11) – 17:21 (72nd place)
Aaron Nanavaty (11) – 17:28 (85th place)
2010 Outlook:
Everyone has talked about the bright future in store for the Flashes of Franklin Central. Well, that future has arrived. After fighting sickness (as many teams did) late in the season last fall, the Flashes still nearly pulled off a state berth as they finished 7th at the Carmel Semi-State. Back from that team are six athletes that are ready to take the next step. Led by front runner Jason Crist, Franklin Central is a legit podium contender and could possibly challenge for the title. If not, look out in 2011.
#5 – Carmel Greyhounds – Carmel Semi-State #4
2009 Results:
Carmel Sectional: 1st place (53 points)
Brebeuf Jesuit Regional: 1st place (68 points)
Carmel Semi-State: 3rd place (131 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 4th place (203 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Carmel Semi-State)
Chris Walden (12) – 15:45 (5th place)
Eric Kinn (11) – 17:04 (51st place)
Zach Rutherford (12) – 17:21 (73rd place)
2010 Outlook:
Carmel will once again be an elite team in the state of Indiana. Though they lose four athletes from last season’s podium team, the Greyhounds will once again reload. The names will change, but the expectations and performances will not. Led by front runner Chris Walden, Carmel will once again rise to the top. An underrated factor in Carmel’s success is the fact that they are so deep. No runner (outside of Walden) can feel safe about his spot in the lineup. Expect Carmel to challenge for the title…again.
#4 – Terre Haute North Patriots – Brown County Semi-State #1
2009 Results:
Terre Haute North Sectional: 1st place (19 points)
Brown County Regional: 1st place (28 points)
Brown County Semi-State: 1st place (55 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 10th place (299 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Brown County Semi-State)
John Mascari (12) – 16:35 (2nd place)
Milton Brinza (12) – 17:00 (8th place)
Brian Depasse (12) – 17:16 (15th place)
Tyeson Mundy (11) – 17:33 (29th place)
Dylan Bertsch (12) – 18:04 (56th place)
Justin Clapp (10) – 18:10 (65th place)
2010 Outlook:
Terre Haute North will once again be the class of the Brown County Semi-State. The Patriots return six athletes from last fall’s 10th place state finals squad. The Patriot attack is led by elite frontrunner John Mascari. He will score single digits each time out. They also return two other athletes that garnered all-semi-state honors. They are once again a podium contender but will need to improve at the 4-5 spots and beyond if they are to challenge for the top spot on their home course.
#3 – North Central (Indianapolis) Panthers – Carmel Semi-State #3
2009 Results:
Brebeuf Jesuit Sectional: 1st place (44 points)
Brebeuf Jesuit Regional: 2nd place (89 points)
Carmel Semi-State: 4th place (132 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 3rd place (189 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Carmel Semi-State)
Futsum Zeinaselllassie (11) – 15:16 (1st place)
Filimon Adhanom (12) – 16:19 (18th place)
Jared Burris (12) – 17:09 (56th place)
Matthew Fox (11) – 17:15 (65th place)
Corey Turner (10) – 17:20 (71st place)
2010 Outlook:
North Central started out the 2009 season with a bang and were many people’s pick to take home the title. They still had a successful season that concluded with a 3rd place state meet finish. Led by Zeinasellassie, the Panthers will be looking to close the deal this time around. They return five athletes who competed at the semi-state last season and will only add depth as they boasted a tremendous junior varsity group. They have a shot at both the individual as well as the team championship in 2010.
#2 – Noblesville Millers – Carmel Semi-State #2
2009 Results:
Carmel Sectional: 2nd place (62 points)
Brebeuf Jesuit Regional: 3rd place (90 points)
Carmel Semi-State: 2nd place (101 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 6th place (218 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Carmel Semi-State)
Ryan Ferguson (12) – 16:16 (17th place)
Sam Roudebush (11) – 16:22 (21st place)
Christian Bowers (12) – 16:36 (29th place)
Collin Ginebaugh (12) – 16:43 (36th place)
Russ Goodwin (12) – 17:06 (53rd place)
2010 Outlook:
2009 was a bittersweet campaign for Noblesville. They were a dominant force week in and week out, but had little to show for it as they did not win at any round of the tournament series. That could change in 2010 as the Millers will be absolutely loaded. They return five athletes from last year’s squad that narrowly (6 points) missed the podium. A podium finish will be a disappointment this time around as the Millers should be thinking state title. They are talented enough to do so if the chips all fall right on the same day.
#1 – Columbus North Bulldogs – Carmel Semi-State #1
2009 Results:
Edinburgh Sectional: 1st place (17 points)
Greensburg Regional: 1st place (15 points)
Carmel Semi-State: 1st place (44 points)
IHSAA State Finals: 1st place (63 points)
Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Carmel Semi-State)
Andrew Diehn (11) – 15:46 (6th place)
Christopher Kelsey (11) – 15:55 (8th place)
Gabe Ocasio (12) – 16:04 (13th place)
Andrew Beiriger (12) – 16:29 (25th place)
2010 Outlook:
Columbus North enters 2010 much differently than they did a year ago. Last year, most had them as podium contenders but they made some early season statements and never looked back as they dominated the state of Indiana. Back from that state title team are four athletes who ran in the semi-state as well as junior Michael Sublette who had a great track season. They also have a tremendously deep junior varsity squad which will help. It is hard seeing anyone dethroning Columbus North though there are some contenders. 2010 will be an amazing year (perhaps the best ever) for cross country in the state of Indiana.
